Those who encounter militarized law enforcement police officers, whether in their daily lives or at a public protest, are far more likely to end up dead or severely injured as a consequence of a police officer’s militarized mindset. The communities of America are not some far-off battlefield, our local police departments are not an occupying force. As American communities respond to police, as a terrifying cycle unfolds: Police Departments use more brutal force to quell protests of police brutality, which results in more tragic deaths. This scenario has played out dramatically across the nation. This scenario is not new. As police officers camouflage themselves in the trappings of a militarizing force, police officers increasingly resemble a battalion prepared to go to war against unarmed civilians, escalating tensions between police officers and peaceful demonstrators. As a 2017 study indicated, Police Departments that use military tactical equipment, police officers are more inclined to display brutal and aggressive behavior and are more inclined to Murder the civilians they are sworn to protect and serve. These statistics are extremely jarring: In 2019, police officers murdered over 1,000 civilians in the United States. These numbers have consistently been over 1,000 in each of the last seven years.
