Good

Chances are, you already know Poe's works. This is just a straight adaptation of the original works, so my review is based entirely off of Kelly's narration, which is a good narration. Seems to be a good adaptation, no changes from the source material. Kelly is clear and concise and has a good delivery.

Recommended for: Horror fans; especially Poe's blend of horror

Classic short stories

Not every story is a winner, there is a lot of great content here. I really enjoy listening to short story collections because it's not a huge sink. You can get a lot of good content without having to invest too much time in to it, individual stories are more tightly written. And it leaves you wanting more.

Perfect for Halloween

Great narration of one of the greatest American authors of all time. This series of short stories is a great collection of Poe's best, and I enjoyed it a great deal during my commute. Recommended.

The original in psychological horror

Before Freud. Before anything recognizable as modern horror. There was Poe. These stories represent his best in what has become truly iconic images that transcend their source material. This collection includes these stories with their themes of insanity and evil:

The Cask of Amontillado: pride, vengeance
The Tell-Tale Heart: obsession
The Black Cat: rage and alcoholism
The Raven: paranoia and supernatural fear
Berenice: love and obsession
The Pit and the Pendulum: inevitability and suspense
Hop Frog: revenge
The Imp of the Perverse: self destruction

Edgar Allan Poe: The Scary Short Story Collection

What can I say about Edgar Allan Poe that has not already been said? He was brilliant. His work makes you think and listen and it gets you twisted up inside it. You can lose yourself in his stories and it is awesome. Apparently, it is not yet something my 13 yo is interested in but what does he know? I have read all of his works I think and every time I re-read it I feel like it is the first time. I think this is a great "starter" for readers who are new to Poe. J.D. Kelly did a really good job narrating this collection as well.

This book was given to me for free at my request for my voluntary and unbiased review.

Terror from Poe

I have read most of the stories in this collection at some time in the past, but a few were new to me. All I can say is that Edgar Allan Poe had a way with words that brings terror to your heart and mind! He must have been a seriously disturbed individual to be able to invoke the tension and horrors in these tales.

Even though Mr. Poe was an American author, I think that the narrator's British accent was perfect for these tales. Mr. Kelly had the perfect pacing that really built up the tension in these tales. Even if you have read these stories many times before, his performance will ensure that you enjoy them as if they were new to you.

I would recommend this collection for anyone who wants to read (or reread) the classic horror of EAP. These are tales that will truly haunt your thoughts for years. I was given the chance to listen to this audiobook through Audiobook Boom! and chose to review it.

Interesting, eerie, and emotional

This is a great collection of Poe stories, including some lesser known ones that I had never read/heard of before. I think the Pit and the Pendulum was my favorite...very different from the Vincent Price film version. (LOL) The narration was fantastic and really captured the emotions of the characters, whether despair, horror, loss, confusion, etc. I enjoyed this audio version more than I ever enjoyed reading the stories myself!
