Such a society has existed: in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), popularly known as East Germany. For 40 years after its creation in 1949, the GDR represented an attempt to create a genuinely egalitarian society where every person had the same opportunities and rights. However, there was a dark side to this social experiment. The Stasi, the secret police of the GDR, monitored the population on a scale never attempted before or since. Freedom of expression simply did not exist, and those brave enough to speak out could find themselves in prison or excluded from society. This was a nation of stark contradictions between rights and benefits and ruthless suppression.
How did this country come to exist? Why did it end abruptly in 1990? What was life really like in the GDR? These questions and more will be answered in this book as we delve into the fascinating and complex story of East Germany.
