About this listen

Present day: A reclusive woman living in outback Australia receives a letter acknowledging a terrible secret from her past. Thirty years before, she stole another woman's life. From the moment the letter is opened two women are on a collision course with destiny.

From the London pop scene, to the opera stages of Europe; from a tiny Greek island, to a stifling manor house full of secrets and deceptions; from the sun-drenched Queensland coast, to the silent outback; Angela and Ellie are two women both looking for something.

One in search of her identity and her memory; the other in search of the love that she had and lost; theirs is a duet whose last note will not be sung until the heart-stopping climax, when a shadow from the past returns to claim them both.

Lovely story

Europe to Australia. Rock stars to opera stars. Family secrets unfold as the story exquisitely read by Kate Morton is red. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you satisfied and engaged throughout the book. A lovely story about hope, the search for identity and the importance of belonging.

Preposterous, Predictable, Yet Pleasing

If you could sum up Duet in three words, what would they be?

PREPOSTEROUS: The story's development depends on plot lines that challenge the imagination and expect the reader to accept one outlandish coincidence after another. I know this is fiction, but it's hard to swallow so much serendipity.

PREDICTABLE: It was immediately apparent that Ellie and Angela were identical sisters separated at birth. The journey to find out how was so fraught with forced manipulation of probable happenstance, it actually becomes a bit predictable.

PLEASING: I was fearful, towards the end, that Freeman was going to force in a plot twist out of left field just to be "original". Thankfully she did not. So the story ends as it should-- the bad guy gets what's coming to him and the sisters reunite (albeit in an extremely conveniently-timed situation, but the intrigue had to end sometime, didn't it?) Several story threads are left dangling but they were inconsequential to the plot anyway so that didn't trouble me.

PROTRACTED: I'll admit, a big draw for me was length -- I love a good value for my $$. I use audible books to keep me company on road trips and when I'm alone at my office doing mindless work -- so at nearly 19 hours, it was a good buy. But even this bargain-hunter would've given up a few hours of listening for a tighter, less meandering story line. All in all, the story is not one I'd give a repeat listen, but it was still enjoyable and satisfying.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The multifarious characters were interestingly layered and had some crazy and complex back-stories too boot. Least interesting? Angela's persistent resistance to recalling her past bordered on annoying.

Have you listened to any of Caroline Lee’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Same delivery as her other performances. She's not the best with all the accents, but her voice is one I don't mind listening to.

Any additional comments?

The double-edged story line mirrors Kate Morton's style, except here, the two main figures are contemporaries. Yes there was the "back in time" feature, but the past experiences of each character only directly influenced that character. This story missed the intertwining of historical elements found in Morton's masterfully woven tales. Honestly, Angela and Ellie' stories could have been written as completely separate novels.

good but long

A well written, good story with a superb narration. I thought it a bit long, but that may be because I listened to it mostly in short sessions. There were a couple of unexplained matters that bothered me and the book ends with a number of story lines coming together in a believable, but remarkable way.

Another one to add to my favourites!

This is the third book I have listened to by this author and I found the storyline so enjoyable I can’t wait to listen to another. I love Caroline Lee’s narration. She would have to be the easiest persons to listen to and makes the story live. I have been a huge fan of Kate Moreton and found this author came through on my Audible feed. So pleased as her books are amazing. Highly recommended.
