About this listen

Jude Deveraux has captivated her listeners with her irresistibly romantic love stories. Now she creates an absorbing tale set in the verdant hills of late 19th century Scotland, where nobility and time-honored customs rule supreme, the majesty of love flourishes, and one beautiful American heiress hopes to become...The Duchess.

What is an "acceptable" man? Claire Willoughby had good reason to wonder - she had to marry one in order to inherit her grandfather's millions. While in London, Claire thinks she finds the perfect candidate: Harry Montgomery, the blond, handsome 11th Duke of MacArran. Their engagement quickly announced, Claire travels to Bramley, the Montgomery estate in Scotland, to meet the Duke's eccentric family. What she doesn't count on, however, is meeting Trevelyan - an exasperating, mysterious, arrogant, know-it-all of a man who lives in secret in the most ancient part of Bramley.

Undeniably attracted to Trevelyan, Claire is reluctantly drawn into his hidden world, where she discovers the truth about the Montgomery family - shocking secrets that could rock the very foundations of Bramley...and bring Claire and Trevelyan ever closer....

Where is the rest of the book?

This was a real hatchet job of a great book. I read paperback years ago but now that my eyesight has gone I am limited to audiobooks. I didn’t notice this was less than 3 hours or I wouldn’t have wasted my time and money. This chewed up version missed so very much. I am sorry this was done to Jude’s work.

Great story…horrible narration

I’d read this book before and love Jude Deveraux. The narration was awful. The male reader tried to do female voices and failed miserably.

One of My Favorite Books

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I often purchased the audible versions of my favorite books to listen to when I travel (and at work when I need to block out office mates chatter!). This one is abridged in extreme. It reads more like a short story. Next time I will pay more attention and get the full novel.

Which character – as performed by Nicol Williamson – was your favorite?

Trevelyan was portrayed well but the female characters all sounded like Grandma.

Disappointed with Abridgement

I first read this book many years ago, and it has since been one of my favorites. I have a long commute and prefer audiobooks while driving and thought this would be an awesome listen. However, I had no idea it was abridged. It wasn't listed in the description. So as the story progressed, I found myself realizing there was SO MUCH missing from the story! The way this was cut has completely changed the perception of certain characters, most especially Claire. So although I LOVE the book, this was disappointing to me.

Good job on the reading so good but missing parts

not everything that was in the book wasn't in the reading audio. it's a great book. I'm sad they had to cut some scenes out. I know cause I know this book inside and out.
it was my first romance novel. I had picked it up in garage sale. I actually had to replace the book 3 times.

but it was good for what its worth . the reading was dramatic and fun.

favorite book !

one of my all time favorite books. I just wish it was not a bridged version they left a huge portion out but none-the-less loved it. Trevelyan and claires story should be made into a movie.

Where’s the rest of the story?

I have read this book a few times over the years. This version is missing pertinent parts of the story. The interaction between Brat and Trevalan and the storyline where the girl shows up from a far away land. She was to be sacrificed - I don’t want to ruin the rest but the full version is so much better - worth reading not this version missing the depth of the characters.

Not worth the read

There was no depth to this book. It was a waist of time. The author does not understand the language of the time.
