When Anne McCaffrey passed in November 2011, it was not only those closest to her who mourned her death; legions of readers also felt the loss deeply. The pioneering science fiction author behind the Dragonriders of Pern series crafted intricate stories, enthralling worlds, and strong heroines that profoundly impacted the science fiction community and genre.

In Dragonwriter, Anne’s son and Pern writer Todd McCaffrey collects memories and stories about the beloved author, along with insights into her writing and legacy, from those who knew her best. Nebula Award-winner Elizabeth Moon relates the lessons she learned from Pern’s Lessa (and from Lessa’s creator); Hugo Award-winner David Brin recalls Anne’s steadfast belief that the world to come will be better than the one before; legendary SFF artist Michael Whelan tells stories about never-before-published Pern sketches from his archives; and more.

Join Anne’s co-writers, fellow science fiction authors, family, and friends in remembering her life and exploring how her mind and pen shaped not only the Weyrs of Pern, but also the literary landscape as we know it.

In awe of her and the world's she created for us

a truly fitting and eloquent tribute to one of, if not "the" most, influential and inspiring scifi writers to put ink to paper!

Uplifting and sad at the same time

What did you love best about Dragonwriter?

There was so much more to Anne McCaffrey than being an author, of which she was marvelous. Wife, mother, friend, mentor, confidant.

What did you like best about this story?

It's gives the reader/listener an open door to the life and loves of Anne Mccaffrey, the ups and downs, how she helped those in need, and just how much she was dearly cherished.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The respect, depth of feeling of the narrators, and the stories of those who knew Annie so well. It wasn't just respect, but a deep abiding love.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I went through the whole gamut of emotions. Knowing how it would end.. I still cried.

Must-listen for Anne fans

Meaningful essays from many of Anne's close friends, fans and family. It was like being present at a celebration of her life and work. I found this book because Janis Ian was a close friend and contributor, and I just finished her wonderful autobiography.

These tributes to Ann McCaffrey was a Joy.

Every story in this book very in formative on how Ann McCaffrey touched every persons life. If only a genie were to grant me 3 wishes. One would have been to know her, befriended her, and got to lover her for a person not just a author.

My best regards to her family (and extended).

A tribute to the Dragon Lady

I just finished this book and I’m in tears. The last 20 minutes are very touching. As a young woman, Anne McCaffrey sparked my imagination and taught me how to be a strong woman with my own opinions. By all accounts she was kind, while also being tough as nails. Her fans miss her as much as those who were closest to her. Indeed, we feel close to her because she gave us so much. I was very lucky to have grown up with one of her nieces and got to enjoy stories of their family holidays to Ireland. I only regret that I wasn’t old enough to make my way to a Dragoncon to meet her in person. This is a lovely book with many heartfelt recollections of the Dragon Lady of Pern.

A telling tale of the writer herself.

Well narrated. A touching and telling tribute that had me smiling, laughing, and crying by turns.

Not what I expected.

I love Ann McCaffrey and thought a story about her and how she got started writing her stories would be something I would want in my library. Not so. Wasn't happy with the whole shpeal from her oldest son that ended up being his views on politics and politicians. Another was cuss words so bad I almost stop listening at that point.
