About this listen

This enchanting tale of dragons, betrayals, and the power of friendship is the first in a charming and thrilling series by New York Times best-selling author Jessica Day George.

Creel can't believe her aunt wants to sacrifice her to the local dragon. It's a ploy to lure a heroic knight so that he will fight the dragon, marry Creel out of chivalrous obligation, and lift the entire family out of poverty. Creel isn't worried. After all, nobody has seen a dragon in centuries.

But when the beast actually appears, Creel not only bargains with him for her life, she also ends up with a rare bit of treasure from his hoard: a pair of simple blue slippers, or so she thinks. But Creel learns that these shoes could be used to save her kingdom from the brink of war - or destroy it.

Wonderful Story - Voices and Pronunciations Could Have Been More Accurate

This story (and Trilogy) is one of our family’s favorites. The reader overall does a great job and her voice matches exactly how we’d imagine the narrator, Creel. Two voices are quite off, however. Everyone I know hears Feniul as a kind of dragon C-3PO when they read the book. He’s quite endearing. Unfortunately, this reader slows his speech, makes it dull, and completely misses the mark. Also, most read Prince Luka as a quick witted but kind prince with a good sense of humor. He would sound proper but warm. The reader, however, reads him as a kind of stoner/joker and makes him sound completely immature. Since these are two main characters, it’s definitely a bit bothersome. Otherwise, the audio book is enjoyable and the beauty and fun of the story far outweigh a few inconsistencies in the reading!

truly pleasant surprise

went into this book just hoping for a basic fairytale like storyline, clean and safe for kids ears and hoping for at least a decent plot.
what I got was a fantastic surprise of well developed loveable characters with true depth and grow to them.
A unique, fresh plot that had me dying to see how it would end for everyone involved. Several bold twists that I hadn't seen coming (I read hundreds of books a year an can usually figure out a book just a few chapters in) that delighted me and had me grinning in sweet revenge.
Though very safe for younger ears, it's well weaved series of intricate layers (much like a fancy constructed ballgowns) created a story that all readers an lovers of fairytales, adventure books an medieval romances could get behind.
The great humor and tounge in cheek descriptions were just the delicious & delicate embroidery on top of that already gorgeous gown. I loved the main and side characters and how they all ended up having much more to do with the plot and originally hinted at during their initial chapters!!
On to book two and I can't wait to see where it all goes!!

The book is fantastic!

In the several times I read this book, I not once pictured the heroine of the book to be a slow, depressed, sardonic teenager. I love the book so much that I gave it four stars but the performance of the person that read the book was so very off. I don't know if the lady that read the book was just trying to read it for the 1st time? Maybe that's why she paused so much and was so slow at the reading of the book? Sadly the performance really lacked! This is so sad for me because I have been emailing audible for years to please get these books in. So disappointing! But I love the author

I’ve read this story several times and own a few copies of the book. The lady reading the story did a good job and was enjoyable to listen to. I definitely recommend this story! The overall performance was very good.

Wonderful!

I have loved this book for years, waiting for an audiobook production, and Laura Knight Keating does not disappoint! An excellent story for older children and adults alike, with wonderful thematic writing and brilliant characters. Jessica Day George manages to weave countless stories through a single character's perspective, so beautiful and enjoyable that I found myself misty-eyed come the ending.

highly recommended :-)

I love this book so much I couldn’t even wait for enough credits to get the rest of the series. I recommend it to all ages but I’m 11 so that’s just my opinion, there were a few parts where I was worried what I’d hear, but I love Jessica day George books, and also recommend the rose legacy, and Tuesdays at the castle. thanks so much!❤️🙂
