About this listen

Some secrets come back to haunt. Others come to kill.

Justine Jones lived her life as a fearful hypochondriac until she was lured into the web of a mysterious mastermind named Packard, who gifts her with extraordinary mental powers - dooming her to fight Midcity’s shadowy war on paranormal crime in order to find the peace she so desperately craves. But now serial killers with unheard-of skills are terrorizing the most powerful beings in Midcity, including mastermind Packard and his oldest friend and worst enemy, Midcity’s new mayor, who has the ability to bend matter itself to his will.

As the body count grows, Justine faces a crisis of conscience as she tests the limits of her new powers and faces an impossible choice between two flawed but brilliant men - one on a journey of redemption, the other descending into a pit of moral depravity.

Thoroughly enjoying this series

I love the story, the characters and plot twists! what I don't care for is the many repetitive uses of "GD" throughout the books.

This series is very well done, it captures you and doesn’t let you go.
I have read many series and this is one of the bests.

I love this series ❤️

This series does not disappoint. The narration is full of life and the story is rich with humor, vilany and charm.

I'm sad that there are only three but I'm so excited to see what happens next 😬😍

Fun series

This is the second installment of The Disillusionists series. Disillusionists are people who use their issues to help rehabilitate other people. The main character, Justine, is a hypochondriac. She uses that to ramp up the fear in other people. They use this to “reboot” the person they are trying to rehabilitate. In this book, Ez, has the power to get into people’s dreams and even control them when they’re sleeping.

Former police chief, now mayor, Otto Sanchez has gotten Packer and his group of Disillusionists to work on people he’s locked up behind barriers. Sanchez wants them rehabilitated before he’s willing to release them. He’s convinced that Ez was sending people out to cannibalize other people. However, it starts to look more and more like she was framed.

There is also a group of people killing the high-caps (people with special abilities, like Otto Sanchez’s ability to lock people behind forcefields). This group of serial killers are called “The Dorks”. Sanchez insists that killers can’t have cool names, but names that make them look weak. There is a list of names, similar to how they have names for hurricanes, that can be used. This is the best thing that Sanchez does in this book, at least in my opinion.

So, I really loved the mystery of this story. I loved how they not only learned more and more about Ez and her issues, but also the investigation into The Dorks. We also see Justine grow as a character, though it does take her a while to get there.

The part I hated the most about this book, the love triangle between Sterling Packard, Justine and Otto Sanchez. Love triangles are something that I can’t stand, but I was able to put my hatred aside for this story. I will be interested to see what happens in the next book.

The secondary characters continue to be great. Simon is someone that I really like. Shelby is another character I really like. She is so good for Justine. I even liked Ez.

Now, I will warn you, this book ends on a cliffhanger. Luckily, I don’t have to wait for the next book. I will be tackling it very soon. I can’t wait to see where The Disillusionists go from here. Some much came out in this book.

Narration
I really continue to enjoy the narration of this series. Rebecca Wisocky continues to do a great job with all the voices. I have to give her a big shoutout for the tone and pacing. When Justine starts to go into her panic, she starts talking faster and you can really hear that panic in her voice. Then when she comes down, the narrator goes back to a more normal pace.

Last hour will leave you breathless

Wisocky's narration is very good. The second in this series starts right were the last left off.

I found Justine's character more frustrating in this installment because she's starting to fall in to the stereotypical heroine faults: self doubt, stupid/rash decisions and questioning the love of the men in her life. I don't find any of the characters to be wholly likable, but they all have some redeeming/endearing qualities.

But the ending of this book really made me do a double take. I could not believe what happened. While that character (name omitted to keep out spoilers) was never my favorite, I never thought they would do something so reprehensible, shocking, heart-breaking...can't even put it into words.

Fantastic Series -- I'm a fan for life!

While the description of the book (a hypochondriac heroine) put me off a bit, I needed something new and the reviews were impressive, so I though what the heck. I started the series with this 1st book on Tuesday -- last night (Wednesday) I was up all night finishing book 2 -- no joke, I just couldn't stop listening. I just downloaded the third, and sadly final, book of the trilogy and can't wait to begin. (I'm going to need to get some sleep first, though.)

From the first I was highly entertained by the world building, the character building and the highly entertaining but also very well written story. What a joy to read an author in this genre who can actually write!

The books reader, Rebecca Wisocky, was perfect, absolutely perfect.

Mind F$%#

I love that this series leaves you feeling like your bit sure who is good and who is bad, but at the end the answer is both clear but complicated.

On of the best series ever!

I read all the reviews and knew this was going to be a good series. I haven’t been disappointed gong back and forth between audible and kindle reading listening and then again slowly savoring each book not wanting them to end but wanting to know what’s going to happen. Double those stars! 10s I love Carolyn Crane. I know I’m going to hate it when this series ends!

Shocking!

This is such an original and refreshing series! I have never read a book series like this! Shocking ending! I’m already downloading the next one! The reader does a good job, some of her guy voices are a little goofy but nothing you can’t adjust to. Her main character voice is great and she does well with accents.
