The North Carolina Medical Board recently stated in their monthly newsletter (August 2023) that 17.5% of physicians in our state have had suicidal ideations in the last 12 months. That’s outrageous and a strong signal that something is very wrong.
Burnout, a fairly new term to me (and something I hope I never experience) is clearly the major culprit. Maybe DPC is a partial answer to this scourge to the world’s greatest profession (I’m a little biased:). As an aside, in 1986 while doing volunteer work in a Tibetan refugee hospital in northern India, I had an audience with the Dalai Lama of Tibet. He told me that if he ever changed jobs, he would like to be a physician. Pretty cool🙏
