Seine Ermittlungen gegen einen mysteriösen Auftragsmörder, der die Stadt in Atem hält, treten seit Wochen auf der Stelle, seine große Liebe Charlotte "Charly" Ritter kehrt von einem Studienjahr in Paris zurück und fängt als Kommissaranwärterin am Alex an – ausgerechnet in der Mordkommission, was die Dinge nicht einfacher macht. Der Tote vom Potsdamer Platz scheint Teil einer Mordserie zu sein, deren Spur weit nach Osten führt. Während Charly als Küchenhilfe ins Haus Vaterland eingeschleust wird, ermittelt Rath in einer masurischen Kleinstadt nahe der polnischen Grenze und gerät in eine fremde Welt.
