About this listen

Desperate Remedies is Thomas Hardy's first published work

Released in 1896, the story centers around young Cytherea Graye, who becomes a servant to Miss Auclyffe, a woman with a troubled past. There, she encounters Aeneas Manston, the incredibly handsome and charming steward of Miss Auclyffe. The anti-hero, Aeneas Manston, as physically alluring as he is evil, fascinates the innocent Cytherea though she is in love with another man. When he cannot seduce her, Manston resorts to deception, blackmail, bigamy, murder, and rape.

This compelling story raises the great questions underlying Hardy's major novels, including the injustice of the class system and the treatment of women.

Thomas Hardy (1840 - 1928) was an English novelist and poet of the naturalist movement.

Really Proper and Slow

Well, I like this kind of book so it appeals to me for being a typical old classic with all the proper language and manners. I will say it's a bit more slow paced than i like. narrator is very good. sound quality is a little poor but not enough to be distracting.

Nice version of an early Hardy novel

Priced very nicely, this version of Desperate Remedies was a very good purchase. No, it's not as smooth as others in both narration nor story, but still very good. Plus seeing how hardy's work progressed is invaluable, especially for devout Hardy fans. The flow of Desperate Remedies as compared to The Woodlanders is pretty choppy, but it contains all of the key elements that continued throughout Hardy's work - Wessex, Casterbridge, evil cousins, bad marriages, rouge men - it's all in there!
