Eine Zeit lang kann Volper nur dank seiner Kampferfahrung überleben. Und dann trifft er auf andere, die er wegen einer seiner beiden Schwächen nicht einfach sich selbst überlassen kann. Kinder sind – auch wenn sie bereits Teenager sind – nach den Regeln dieser Welt noch minderjährig und werden daher als Kinder betrachtet, die in diese schreckliche Welt gestolpert sind, ohne wirklich zu wissen, worauf sie sich da eingelassen haben. Der Veteran steht vor einer schwierigen Entscheidung: Er muss sie entweder beschützen oder ihnen beibringen, wie sie allein überleben können.
Ein Soldat muss schließlich ein Ehrenmann sein und darf niemals einen anderen Menschen im Stich lassen. Mit der Zeit werden diese Kinder mehr als nur seine Schützlinge: Sie werden zu Freunden und vielleicht sogar zu einer neuen Familie.
Doch das Schicksal entscheidet, dass er zu Höherem ausersehen ist. Es reißt ihn mit in einen Strudel von Ereignissen und weist ihm einen fast vergessenen Beruf zu, der sowohl treue Anhänger als auch gefährliche Feinde mit sich bringt.
Und dann offenbart eine Reise in den innersten Kern dieser Stadtwelt eine noch erschreckendere Wahrheit über die wahre Natur und den Zweck dieses Ortes. Umso bedrückender ist die Erkenntnis, was menschliche Gier und Grausamkeit hervorgebracht haben.
