Seit er seinen Hund verloren hat, ist Anton Redelberger ein trauriger Mann. Mehr als traurig, geradezu griesgrämig ist er. Und er wird immer griesgrämiger. Über alles Mögliche muss er sich ärgern. Deshalb nennen die Leute ihn "Herrn Ungemach". Als er eines Tages einen Fisch kauft, um vielleicht einmal etwas zu essen, über das er sich nicht ärgern muss, stellt er zu Hause fest, dass dieser Fisch noch lebt. Er kann sogar sprechen und merkt sofort, was für ein Miesepeter Herr Ungemach ist. Um nicht in der Bratpfanne zu landen, macht er ihm immer wieder listige Vorschläge, wie er seinen Ärger austricksen könnte. Ob er damit Erfolg hat?
Lehrer Munzinger ist ein ernster, fast trauriger Mann. Eines Tages gibt ihm sein Nachbar einen Tipp: Sauer macht lustig! Herr Munzinger nimmt sich das zu Herzen und beginnt, Saures zu essen und zu trinken: Sauerkraut, Zitronensaft, Sauerkirschen, Essig. Tatsächlich: Er wird von Tag zu Tag lustiger, ja, richtig albern. Deshalb nennen seine Schüler ihn nun Herrn Alberich. Bald kann er vor lauter Lachen kaum noch unterrichten und seine Klasse macht nur noch Blödsinn. Da schickt der Direktor Herrn Alberich nach Hause. Dort lacht er so laut weiter, dass sein Nachbar den Arzt ruft. Ob es ein Gegenmittel für seine Lachkrankheit gibt?
