About this listen

On the night of Alex Carmody's sixteenth birthday, she and her best friend, Cass, are victims of a terrible car accident. Alex survives; Cass doesn't. Consumed by grief, Alex starts cutting school and partying, growing increasingly detached. The future she'd planned with her friend is now meaningless to her.

Meg Carmody is heartbroken for her daughter, even as she's desperate to get Alex's life back on track. The Birches, a boarding school in New Hampshire, promises to do just that, yet Alex refuses to go. But when Meg finds a bag of pills hidden in the house, she makes a fateful call to a transporter whose company specializes in shuttling troubled teens to places like The Birches, under strict supervision. Meg knows Alex will feel betrayed - as will her estranged husband, who knows nothing of Meg's plans for their daughter.

When the transport goes wrong - and Alex goes missing - Meg must face the consequences of her decision and her deception. But the hunt for Alex reveals that Meg is not the only one keeping secrets.

Decent story . I did not like all the foul Language. The actions seemed plausible though.

Not the best audible story

Unbelievable that a 16 year old would be so into the fake "Phish" band... could have done without that story line. And the characters singing was A N N O Y I N G! Also unbelievable that a intervention "transporter" would share any of their own personal life details with the kid they were transporting.

A great story about life's tragedies

The author did a fabulous job showing what a tragic situation can do to a person, literally change one's life, even though we survive. The story hit close to home for me, not in the same situation, but a situation nonetheless changed my life and challenged my family. Thankfully, we remained intact. If anyone wants to say the situation are unreal, don't believe it because they are.

When Alex survives a car accident that her friend doesn't, she spins out of control. Her mother, Meg becomes so involved with helping her, that she doesn't notice what's going on around her. Her husband unexpectedly asks for a divorce, she has another child to care for, and her own job and life to get through every day. So of course, why would she look for any way to help her. That help comes in the form of a car transport service, and when her husband disagrees with her method, she goes behind his back and does it anyway.

Who will know? He's out of town after all. But when it goes wrong, she must tell him and face his wrath.

The story is an emotional roller coaster that will really make you think about looking deeper into a problem than what's on the surface.

YA Literature

This is YA literature at its best. Involving story; teenage angst; clueless parents. Which is also the reason I didn't like it. I'm no longer a teenager. Haven't been one in a very long time. (My grandchildren are older than Alex.) I'd rather read about adult themes, such as following Alex's parents through their divorce, through his addiction and rehabilitation, if he goes for any. How did the family get to the "other side"? Were they intact? What did they learn? This was a good story, just not my choice.

Uninteresting and flat

Book was uninteresting and flat; I can't say I'd recommend. I kept waiting for some sort of revelation or action, but nothing. If you're into a feel-good, happy ending, then read this, but that's all it is.

Not what I expected

I understand what the concept was supposed to be about, but it got a little boring. And I don't think the horrible singing was needed.
