About this listen

Tanyana is among the highest ranking in her far-future society - a skilled pionner, able to use a mixture of ritual and innate talent to manipulate the particles that hold all matter together. But an accident brings her life crashing down around her ears. She is cast down amongst the lowest of the low, little more than a garbage collector.

Who did this to her, and for what sinister purpose? Her quest to find out will take her to parts of the city she never knew existed, and open the door to a world she could never have imagined.

Critic reviews

“A fabulous debut. Glorious and grim cityscapes, kick-ass characters, and a deepening mystery at its heart.” (Trent Jamieson)

An excellent first book

I really enjoyed this book. Rented it as an e-book from the library. Liked it so much I bought the aduio. Now I can't wait for the second book to come out in an aduio version.

Worth A Credit

The story is compelling. It could have easily been a Hunger Games, as the concept is really interesting. The most unfortunate aspect of the story is that it suffers from being overwritten. The overuse of adjectives is distracting, as is the main character's inconsistent emotional perspective, but get past those two things and it's quite good. The only other problem is that the writer could have taken the story in a more expansive direction, especially at the end where the main character, Tatiana, has knowledge that could be used to jump start the next book in the series; but rather than having her share the information, the author takes a more reflective route. It would have been cool for Tatiana to share knowledge that she had gained in the hidden library. Again, this is a good story, though overwritten. Oh, and one final thing, there was a weird blip at the end of the audio. The story is drawing to a close, then abruptly, we are in the midst of another story, different character names and all. I imagine that will be fixed at some point.

it's one of three books

unique Magic system involving manipulating of energies through particles.
I know that it's one of three books but for some reason the other two books never made it to audio.
that's the only flaw to this series is that you can't listen to the other two books.

Good story, excellent reader.

Often times the reviews I read on audible barely even mention the reader.
Kate Rudd turned what might be just a decent story into a memorable one.

In particular the portrayal of Lad, a mentally handicapped giant of a man, was spot on and very well done. Having a brother with a similar mental capacity she was able to portray the character well, without it sounding corny or demeaning. I also found her voice and tone was an excellent fit for the main character, Tanyana.

The story itself was pretty good, a lot of questions and very few answers only surfacing at the very end. I also found the last few sentences a bit cliche for a book that was clearly a part of the series, what did you not realize we read the title?

Overall it was worth the credit, and I'm glad I went out on a limb and tried this new series out. Can't wait to read more of Tanyana's adventure.

Really disappointed

I read this book because I thought it was the basis of the TV series, “Debris.” Apparently, it wasn’t. The narrator was excellent. The story not so much. Even after finishing, I never really got what was going on. Maybe it’ll be explained in future books, but in that case, I’ll never know because there’s no way I’m reading any more of them. I’m a lifetime, devoted science fiction reader, so I tried to be objective and give it a fair shake, but no.
