About this listen

As thrilling as any novel, as taut and exciting as any adventure story, Peter Hathaway Capstick’s Death in the Long Grass takes us deep into the heart of darkness to view Africa through the eyes of one of the most renowned professional hunters.

Few men can say they have known Africa as Capstick has known it, leading safaris through lion country; tracking man-eating leopards along tangled jungle paths; running for cover as fear-maddened elephants stampede in all directions. And of the few who have known this dangerous way of life, fewer still can recount their adventures with the flair of this former professional hunter-turned-writer.

Based on Capstick’s own experiences and the personal accounts of his colleagues, Death in the Long Grass portrays the great killers of the African bush, not only the lion, leopard, and elephant, but the primitive rhino and the crocodile waiting for its unsuspecting prey, the titanic hippo and the Cape buffalo charging like an express train out of control. Capstick was a born raconteur whose colorful descriptions and eye for exciting, authentic detail bring us face to face with some of the most ferocious killers in the world underrated killers like the surprisingly brave and cunning hyena, silent killers such as the lightning-fast black mamba snake, collective killers like the wild dog.

Listeners can lean back in a chair, sip a tall, iced drink, and revel in the kinds of hunting stories Hemingway and Ruark used to hear in hotel bars from Nairobi to Johannesburg, as veteran hunters would tell of what they heard beyond the campfire and saw through the sights of an express rifle.

This is one of the greatest books on hunting in Africa from a talented hunter and author. In it, Capstick lists his adventures with the Big Five and some of the other famous animals of Africa.

I read this book 40 years ago, and my children enjoyed my reading them their favorite chapters again and again.
Capstick has a wonderful writing style and a wealth of experience which combine to give the reader a “you are there” experience. He has written a number of fine books and this one is perhaps my favorite. I can’t say enough how happy I am to see his wonderful books finally in the audio format.

One of my all time favorites!!!

I read all of Capstick's books from the library 30 years ago. I have been able to buy them over the years since.
Today this book showed up on my Audible recomendations. I've been waiting for this for the 12 years I've been listening to Audible books.
I bought both books immediately.
PLEASE read the rest of his books!

I used to read Capstick’s books years ago, in my teens snd 20s more and have a decent collection of them, but kept endlessly wishing they were on Audible or some form of audio. To my delight one popped up in my feed a few days ago! I just figured beings as these were written in probably the ‘70s that there wasn’t much hope. They did not disappoint. With a fabulous narrator, the books were as entertaining and amusing (along with horrifying- you can only cope with the stories with humour) as they ever were. Thank you thank you!!!!

Finally!! Capstick books on Audio!!

I have been searching for this book in print, but found it on Audible. Excellent stories. The prose is very powerful and paints an excellent picture. Those big cats are creepy! The only problem, as with most audible books, is in the performance. The narrator does a pretty good job, but his phrasing is not how I would read it. Because of this it would sometimes take me out of the book. Great overall, though. Get it!

One of the best books of its kind!

Great break down as to the danger of Africa’s wild animals. Also a pretty good take on people not understanding the big picture

Very good
