About this listen

What's behind a series of mysterious deaths among the favourite concubines of Sultan of Turkey, Abdul Hamid II? Suspecting a plot against himself, the Sultan has called on Sherlock Holmes to investigate. However, as a man, the detective is clearly unable to penetrate the exotic enclosed world of the harem, so he reluctantly enlists the help of his landlady, Mrs Hudson. Together with Dr Watson, they travel across Europe by Orient Express to Constantinople, on the way encountering Holmes's old enemy, Baron Mauterpuis.

Once ensconced in the harem, Mrs Hudson has to adjust to the strange new world she finds there, rife with jealousy and superstition. Holmes has assured her that she is in no danger, but, while trying to unravel the tangled web around the deaths of the concubines, Mrs Hudson uncovers some alarming evidence regarding the Baron, that puts her in mortal danger.

The medley of characters in this engrossing novel includes the formidable Abdul Hamid II himself, the sweet young Princess Naime, a glowering eunuch called Bashir, Mrs Hudson's lively little French maid Madeleine, a Russian diva, a homely English governess, a malevolent little boy and a tiger named Guzellik.

Excellent

I was saddened and appalled to find out what was happening to the ladies of the harem. Greed pure and simple. Scams were a means to an end. There's never enough justice for such heinous atrocities. Holmes in for the win. That's one thing I always expect and count on. He does it in such brilliant fashion. I enjoyed this adventure. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest opinion. The narrator did an excellent job bringing the characters and story to life.

Mrs. Hudson’s Big Adventure

When Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are asked to look into a series of deaths among the favorite concubines of the Sultan of Turkey, the only way to get information is to have an informant in the Harem. Only Mrs Hudson can get in there.

A Thrilling and Engaging Adventure

I particularly enjoy Susan Knight’s books of Holmes and Watson that include Mrs. Hudson. This adventure has the trio heading to Turkey to investigate threats against the Sultan and the deaths of several of his favorites. Mrs. Hudson is installed in the Harem to investigate from within, while Holmes and Watson work other avenues. There are a lot of tangled threads to unravel, including the appearance of a nemesis on the Orient Express on the way to Constantinople. Rich descriptions of the setting and scenes bring the reader/listener right into the action. The narration by Steve Langan adds immensely to the engrossing adventure. His performance of the characters and the creating the atmosphere beings the story to life.
