About this listen

Two young, attractive women. Both savagely attacked, brutalized, raped, and murdered.

Rachel Newhouse disappeared on the night of November 12, 1998, in San Luis Obispo, California. Only months later, in the same town, Aundria Crawford lost her life in an act of unimaginable violence.

As authorities worked to find clues to the killer's identity, parole officer David Zaragoza paid a routine visit to one of his charges - Rex Allan Krebs, a violent serial rapist who'd served only 10 years of a 20-year sentence. After sending Krebs back to jail for violating his parole, Zaragoza found a key chain belonging to one of the victims.

An intensive search led to the gruesome discovery of buried remains near Krebs' secluded cabin. In his confession, Krebs asked, "If I am not a monster, then what am I?" A jury responded by sentencing him to death by lethal injection.

It was an interesting story, but hard to follow along. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if it was about more than one killer or not at one point. The end of the book became so bogged down with the trial, I skipped the 3 chapters and went to the last chapter. It is heartbreaking to hear what the girls went through. Also heartbreaking what Rex Krebs endured as a child. He still made choices that were devastating for the victims family, his family, and friends.

Interesting story

As a fan of true crime, this one checks all the boxes. It really gets in to the mind of the killer and his methods and motivations. It’s not really a whodunnit, but rather it walks you through the crime, the investigation and the trial. Because the narration was so good, I finished it. But as others have said, it’s very thorough and detailed. I wish I hadn’t heard quite so much about the crimes themselves though. If you had been a victim of a rape, I would NEVER listen to this.

Best narration ever, good story too

Tough book to get through. NOT because of graphic detail (not that much) but because it drags like a drunken slug! The ridiculously overly detailed description of a prison went on and on...

WAY Too Much Necessary Detail.

This author has become my favorite! Very detailed and engages the reader. A very gruesome story, but I like the way the writer explores the depth of the killer as well as the young women and ultimately shows all were victims of some kind. I definitely recommend!

Well Written!

I love that Audible has a plus catalog, and I have listened to some fantastic books. This is not one of them. It reminds me of a high school student just adding stuff to reach a certain word number. Including chapter upon chapter of court transcript and police interrogation is lazy. Chapter upon chapter of the story of the killer's challenged childhood is same. I think I now know more about his family than I do my own. I also really resent when a book author feels s/he can tell you what a homicide victim was thinking/feeling in the final moments before the criminal laid hands on him/her.

A three hour book told in ten hours

The book describes in detail the feelings and emotions that a rape survivor or a person with PTSD experience. I have suffered with PTSD and Sandra’s story put into words what I’ve never been able to express.

For anyone who’s been a victim

I listened to this book twice because I was struggling with my feelings and toward the last few chapters of my last listen...It hit me..there's not 2 victims in this story...there's THREE!!! Its one of the saddest situations I've ever read thru. I researched my feelings and spoke with Mr. Krebs...after doing so, my feelings didn't change. He never had a life.. from the moment he was born til present.. there's always been someone controlling and running his life, and sadly it was always a horrible outside source. If California kills Mr. Krebs...it will be yet another murder in the state and it will change nothing. it serves no meaning to this end and he will just die as he was forced to live...under another's control!!!!!

Unreal Story

Story was factually gruesome and hard to listen to some of the things this being did to his victims. The story-teller was pretty bad as he sounded like he was raspy and sometimes hard to understand because of it. Had to fast forward through another book of too-long back and forth with the trial rhetoric.

Story pretty gruesome

The first thing I would suggest is to have your listing speed at 1.5. That’s the only way to get through the narration.

Yes, it was graphic but it’s a true crime book so it’s going to be a little graphic. I suggest, if these things bother you that you shouldn’t read true crime books about serial rapists, and murderers.

It’s very detailed and is more about how this person became what he was. Although the victims were discussed it was not in great detail.

This author is masterful and going, telling the story of two women, who endured a nightmare at the hands of a psychopathic killer. It takes you along for the journey as this evil monster enters the lives of these young women and terrorizes them beyond imagination! You truly get to know the victims and their families. They weren’t just names, they were real people, young girls with much to offer the world. Cut short. Gripping account!

Riveting, page turning, nail biting explosive true crime writing!
