Las puertas que en esta nueva edición se abren, le dieron paso a mis lectores y oyentes en 1988 cuando esta obra se publicó por primera vez, recogiendo poemas escritos entre 1984 y 1988 en Cali, Colombia. Muchos de estos poemas fueron los primeros que leí en recitales y festivales de poesía. En esta época, después de terminar un trabajo en la Costa Pacífica Colombiana en un programa de desarrollo, fui profesor de biología por tres años en un colegio.
El poema renuncia recoge la salida de la institución educativa donde trabajaba, frustrado por los manejos adulterados de las calificaciones en el principio de la desarticulación social que la ciudad vivió con los inicios del narcotráfico.
El poema me declaro desertor, producto de una experiencia con estudiantes que se rehusaron a hacer el servicio militar; tuvo gran divulgación y a través del tiempo me han llegado versiones en otros idiomas.
Los poemas me declaro desertor y constancia, este último dedicado a mi madre, fueron musicalizados en el 2001 por Massimiliano Agelao y aparecieron junto a otros poemas de mi siguiente poemario, en nuestra casa, en mi álbum cuántos poemas.
Estos dos poemas fueron retomados por el Grupo Musicalizando que los presentó en muchos escenarios y quedaron para la posteridad en el álbum Desconectado y en video que puedes encontrar en YouTube. Uno de estos videos, del Poema 15 de Pablo Neruda lleva más de 2.5 millones de vistas. El poema lluvia de estrellas apareció en la obra Tríptico, videopoemas realizados por Cuca Pacheco con sus fotografías y su propia producción que se encuentra igualmente en YouTube.
Algunos poemas de esta obra tienen pequeñas correcciones y modificaciones realizadas para la presente edición.
