Publisher's summary

Between his work on the 2014 Audible Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel, and his performance of Classic Love Poems, narrator Richard Armitage (The Hobbit, Hannibal) has quickly become a listener favorite. Now, in this defining performance of Charles Dickens' classic David Copperfield, Armitage lends his unique voice and interpretation, truly inhabiting each character and bringing real energy to the life of one of Dickens' most famous characters.

This epic, exuberant novel is one of the greatest coming-of-age stories in literature, chronicling David Copperfield's extraordinary journey through life as he encounters villains, saviors, eccentrics, and grotesques - including the wicked Mr. Murdstone, stouthearted Peggotty, formidable Betsey Trotwood, impecunious Micawber, and the odious Uriah Heep. Dickens' great novel (based, in part, on his own boyhood and which he described as a "favorite child") is a work filled with life, both comic and tragic.

Listen to Richard Armitage bring Dickens' words to life, and you'll understand why Virginia Woolf called David Copperfield "the most perfect of all the Dickens novels".

Featured Article: The top 100 classics of all time

Before we whipped out our old high school syllabi and dug deep into our libraries to start selecting contenders for this list, we first had to answer the question, "How do we define a classic?" The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might guess, though there’s a lot to be said for the old adage, "You know it when you see it" (or, in this case, hear it). Of course, most critically, each of our picks had to be fabulous in audio. So dust off your aspirational listening list—we have some amazing additions you don’t want to miss.

The Armitage Voice"

Where does David Copperfield rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

So far, this is the one I love the most....David Copperfield is one of my favorites anyway, but to have that voice, the voice of Richard Armitage "read it to me", just awesome

Have you listened to any of Richard Armitage’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, they way he reads, the tones, the inflections, the voice changes is just brilliant..

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I almost did, but I needed to sleep...

Any additional comments?

Just keep them coming with Richard Armitage at the helm.......Thank you to Audible and to "The Armitage" for bringing David Copperfield to life.....

Outstanding narration!

Richard Armitage's performance added immensely to my enjoyment of this classic. This quality of narration is a real bonus when rereading a great book for the second or third time.

One for the ages

Richard Armitage's performance of this iconic novel is absolutely not to be missed: it is, by far, the best dramatic interpretation of a work of literature I have ever heard.

I, personally, do not enjoy the narration

Before beginning this book, I had just finished Simon Prebble's reading of Great Expectations and was craving more from Mr. Dickens. I am 4 chapters in and wondering if I can finish. Armitage's voice not just not my cup of tea and his character interpretations are ghastly.

Enjoyed on my daily commute

Richard Armitage has a musical voice and I loved his portrayal of the different characters! The story is one of Dicken's best. It has some very memorable characters. Like most Dicken's novels I feel he wraps up the story lines too neatly having characters connect in various ways in the end, but I do enjoy the stories, regardless.
