About this listen

The prodigal son of a respected beer baron, William Lemp inherited his family's legacy in the form of a brewery his father, Adam Lemp, raised to an empire. This empire was built on blood and an American dream hiding a nightmare. William soon discovered that the good fortune of the Lemp family came with a price. What followed was an era of grief and madness, plagued by war and prohibition, sending what once seemed a charmed existence spiraling into darkness.

Because the dead don't always stay buried, and when you make a deal with the devil, he will come to collect.

Based on true events.

3.5 Overall

3.5 Stars

I both loved and loathed this book. I loved the history and historical accuracy that this book portrays. The research Candace Adams put into writing this is obvious and I really enjoyed reading that part of it. I also loved the idea of the cursed lineage that she takes with the Lemp family. It's an interesting idea and I enjoyed how she used historical facts to build her fiction.

However, she couldn't get around the reality of the history. This is a book about a lot of people you will really dislike and maybe three you will like. I honestly wanted the bad things to happen to most of the people we meet because they were just that despicable. Curse or no, they deserved it.

It took me a while to decide what I wanted to rate this book because I honestly couldn't figure out where I landed feelings wise. It's written well, the history is good, but the characters are meh. Take that as you will.

Transparent apparition

I liked the way they captured the character of the Lemps, and how what could be understood as a blessing is most certainly a curse. The success ultimately being sprung forth by a demon. If you’re of a spiritual mind as a Christian this is an excellent scenario of how the devils move into your life. Choose the purpose of the American dream invites the devils, choose the purpose of God that invites God into your life.
