About this listen
On a patrol boat near Waterloo Bridge, police superintendent William Monk notices a young couple engaged in an intense discussion. Seconds later, the two plunge to their deaths in the icy waters of the Thames. Was it an accident, a suicide, or a murder? Ever the investigator, Monk learns that the woman, Mary Havilland, had planned to marry the fair-haired man who shared her fate. He also discovers that Mary's father had recently died in a supposed suicide. But Mary's friends share their own darks suspicions with Monk, who now faces the mysteries surrounding three deaths. Aided by his intrepid wife, Hester, Monk searches for answers. From luxurious drawing rooms where powerful men hatch their unscrupulous plots, to the sewers beneath the city where poor folk fight crippling poverty, Monk must connect the clues before death strikes again.

Story
It's 1910, and Daniel Pitt is a reluctant lawyer who would prefer to follow in the footsteps of his detective father. When the biographer Russell Graves, who Daniel is helping defend, is sentenced to execution for the murder of his wife, Daniel's Pitt-family investigative instincts kick in, and he sets out to find the real killer. With only 21 days before Graves is to be executed, Daniel learns that Graves is writing a biography of Victor Narraway, the former head of Special Branch and a close friend of the Pitts. And the stories don't shed a positive light. Is it possible someone is framing Graves to keep him from writing the biography-maybe even someone Daniel knows in Special Branch? The only answer, it seems, lies in the dead woman's corpse.

The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

London, 1882. Alec Lonsdale, a young reporter on the Pall Mall Gazette, is working on a story about a fatal house fire. But the postmortem on the victim produces shocking results: Patrick Donovan's death was no accident. But why would someone murder a humble shop assistant and steal part of his brain? When a second body is discovered, its throat cut, and then a third, Lonsdale and his spirited female colleague, Hulda Friederichs, begin to uncover evidence of a conspiracy that reaches to the highest echelons of Victorian society.

What a ride!!!!!!!
I just love this series. Anne Perry has really created her world with a solid foundation so she can add characters, change Monk and Hester's jobs, change the area of London they're in, but she always keeps this series evolving which makes it so interesting.
I love these characters and how Ms. Perry makes them act according to their alignment, fleshing out their lives and giving those lives real meaning. These characters feel so "human" to me. So human that at times I hear a whisper, I hear a sound, and feel Hester and Monk...two silver-flash smiles....and then they're gone.

Whirlwind
This book was a whirlwind of action and excitement from the beginning. Monk and Hester are both adjusting to to roles and circumstances. His as an Inspector with the Thames River Police and hers as a stay at home wife. They've moved and there are many new characters added. My favorite new character was Rose Applegate. She was a breath of fresh air, and delivered my favorite line from the book. Some of my favorite secondary characters have returned. The mystery is multilayered so solving it wasn't easy. It was a wonderful story which offered some potential changes in the series.

I played this at 1.2. - 1.25 Not a fan of the narrator.
This could do with a good editing. There are parts where it just drags. My favorite parts are the courtroom scenes and the maneuvering Up to that point.
