Danny Boyle and the Underland

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Because I read the second book first, I would recommend this book, The second book was more for a younger audience than this The slight, brief violence with the Mother was more extreme than I would feel comfortable sharing with little ears.

If you’ve listened to books by William Graham before, how does this one compare?

The second book in the series is my favorite of the two. This book had shocking moments. But I loved the relationship between the three young friends.
I think William Graham is a wonderful children's author, but was this book meant for MG?
The narrator was excellent.
I'm enjoying the new, unexplored realms Mr. Graham spins. This is not an "underworld" book, but a real 'normal' world under our own. Unlike Jules Verne's version, yet unlike mythical beings.
I like how his books stand apart from the same stories bombarding the shelves.

Which scene was your favorite?

Several, mostly centered around Melinda. When she was outspoken and said, "I don't have to do anything I don't want to. You aren't the boss of me!" How many of us have heard that? I loved it!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When out defiant Melinda shared her belief her brother would find and rescue her. Sibling rivalry rivals not the devotion between the two.

Any additional comments?

young adults would love losing themselves in

Danny Boyle is a twelve-year-old adventurer with an imagination that knows no bounds.  His uncle reveals some of his hometowns secrets – a group of people banished, houses falling into huge sink holes and more!  Together with his best friend, Chip and Danny’s younger sister, Melinda the three trudge up to the caves and set out to find the banished people.

From there the adventure begins!  They solve the mystery of the sink holes swallowing up houses, must fight a huge water creature that lurks beneath the black waters and escape from the Underlands!  Held prisoner they must find a way to get back topside and reunite with their family.  The Underlands are different and unpredictable so the children must be smart!

A delightful child’s book that is entertaining and whimsical.  A well written story that is neither rushed nor slow.  William Graham, author, does an excellent job of choosing words that are vivid and rich in imagery and that also invoke the listeners imagination as well.  Characters are fully developed and engaging.

The narrator, Beth Bostic did an excellent job with the voices and projecting the emotions appropriate for the action.  Bostic spoke clearly and confidently, gifted as a narrator she furthered the engagement of the listeners with the characters and story.  I enjoyed her reading very much and look forward to hearing more from her.

This is a story that most pre-teens and young adults would love losing themselves in.

There were no issues with production of this book, it was clear.

Sweet

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Danny Boyle, accompanied by his friend and his sister, is a twelve year old adventurer, investigating the houses that are disappearing. This was a really sweet novel, with brilliant interaction between Danny and his sister Melinda. It really captured the sibling rivalry and love and I really liked that.
