About this listen

From the number one New York Times best-selling author of the Reckoners series, the Mistborn trilogy, and the Stormlight Archive comes the third book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction.

Spensa’s life as a Defiant Defense Force pilot has been far from ordinary. She proved herself one of the best starfighters in the human enclave of Detritus, and she saved her people from extermination at the hands of the Krell - the enigmatic alien species that has been holding them captive for decades. What’s more, she traveled light-years from home as an undercover spy to infiltrate the Superiority, where she learned of the galaxy beyond her small, desolate planet home.

Now, the Superiority - the governing galactic alliance bent on dominating all human life - has started a galaxy-wide war. And Spensa’s seen the weapons they plan to use to end it: the Delvers. Ancient, mysterious alien forces that can wipe out entire planetary systems in an instant. Spensa knows that no matter how many pilots the DDF has, there is no defeating this predator.

Except that Spensa is Cytonic. She faced down a Delver and saw something eerily familiar about it. And maybe, if she’s able to figure out what she is, she could be more than just another pilot in this unfolding war. She could save the galaxy.

The only way she can discover what she really is, though, is to leave behind all she knows and enter the Nowhere. A place from which few ever return.

To have courage means facing fear. And this mission is terrifying.

although I feel this book is a little weaker than the previous 2, I highly enjoyed it.

Entertaining, but drawn out

Whereas the first 2 books.. and the excellent novellas.. were sci-fi with a dash of woo woo mystery/tech, this one is like 80%+ woo woo. The vast majority of it is Spin off in never never land dealing with absurd people and problems.

It's entertaining, and dives into the deeper mysteries surrounding cytonics and all that, and she learns and grows all along the way, and that *is* important for the overall arc.. but at least half of it could have been montaged, and the rest given over to moving the real world/actual story along.

Fans of fantasy, or the real weirdos who like a full blend of fantasy/sci-fi will probably love it. My opinion is that Sanderson has plenty of pure fantasy.. I hope beyond hope that this was a necessary delve into the "cytonic power" backstory and exposition, and the next books get back to scifi with a dash of magic. Or that Sanderson gets an itch to write some pure sci-fi at some point.. cause his world-building and character development is definitely some of the best, if a little biased towards young readers.

So gripping

You got to hand it to Sanderson, he does a great job in innovating while still keeping true to his characters and world.
Skyward was one thing. Starsight was quite different. And now here comes this third book, and it’s another thing all together. Some part of me still misses the smaller world and story of skyward, but at the same time I really enjoy how different all 3 books are, and how they build off of each other. It’s a hell of a ride. I could hardly put it down.
Can’t wait to see where he takes us with the next one.

Another banger from Sanderson.

I loved this book. Great development from our MC. It has a lot of build up momentum for story to come but it made me feel like I got to know Spin a lot more. Also expect some feels. I can't wait for more, but Sanderson always does that for me.

Suzy Jackson also does a great job with narration, I think she's the prefect voice for Spin.

Not what I was hoping

I loved the other books in the series and the novellas but this one just didn't quite hit the nail on the head for me. We'll see what happens next, still two more novellas that are coming out.

Another great story

This series just keeps getting better and I had just finished Sunreach and New Dawn novellas before I listened to this book. Starting novella three now. Definitely worth the listen and the credit!
