About this listen

In 1540, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado led an expeditionary force from Mexico into what is now the American Southwest. His journey provides the backdrop for this contemporary mystery novel.

Deputy Sheriff Calvin Creede mostly works alone in one corner of Arizona’s smallest county. His job had been a simple one until the day a flash flood exposes the rusted remains of an old pickup.

A body in the truck turns out to be the long-lost son of a prominent ranching family, and forensic evidence shows it was murder. Deputy Creede faces a 20-year-old cold case with too many suspects, from an ex-girlfriend and jealous family members to drug lords and looters of archaeological sites.

The story unfolds amid two issues affecting modern day Southeastern Arizona: the loss of native rangeland to exurban development and tensions along the international border. Resolution of the case leaves both of these problems in place, but sheds fictional yet plausible light on a Southwestern mystery that has been around for nearly five centuries.

Great book, AWFUL reader

The reader obviously does not know how to pronounce anything in Spanish. The horrible mispronunciations ruined the otherwise very good story for someone who lives in the area in which the book is set. The audio publisher or the authors or somebody should have caught this wayyyyyy before loosing it on the public. Dreadful.

A surprising great story!

Bought this by accident, and ended up really liking it! Good characters, narrator who did an excellent job with the cast, and home AZ backdrop.

Coronado’s Trail

The story line was believable. The location and geographic descriptions were accurate. However, the narrator did not pronounce the Spanish or Native American names and various locations correctly. It appears that the narrator did no research of the Spanish language in order to ensure that proper pronunciation of the Spanish language was used.
