Connis Nachbar "Mecker Herrmann" klingelt bei Familie Klawitter: Sein weißer Koi "Susumu" sei aus seinem Gartenteich verschwunden und wer sonst als Kater Mau habe ihn gefressen! Beweisen kann er es allerdings nicht. Conni findet es mehr als ungerecht, dass Mau gleich Hausarrest bekommt. Sie beschließt mit ihren Freunden Billy, Anna und Paul ein Detektivbüro in Pauls Gartenlaube einzurichten, um der Sache gründlich auf den Grund zu gehen. Paul hat auch schon das nötige Equipment für eine professionelle Spurensicherung parat.
Doch leider lässt Herr Herrmann die Jungdetektive nicht einmal an den Tatort. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass Nachbar Herrmann ausgerechnet auch noch der Chef von Connis Papa ist. Da der japanische Zierkarpfen immerhin stolze 3.000 Euro gekostet hat, ist Diplomatie und vor allem höchste Vorsicht bei den Ermittlungen vonnöten. Doch es kommt, wie es kommen muss: Die vier Spürnasen begehen prompt Hausfriedensbruch und können nun nur noch "undercover" ermitteln.
Die Spur führt sie zu einer sehr sympathischen Koi-Spezialistin. Zum Glück kann das Geheimnis schon bald gelüftet werden, "Susumu" ist wieder da, Kater Mau auf ganzer Linie entlastet (auch wenn er tatsächlich am liebsten Fisch isst - aber eben nur aus der Dose) und für Herrn Herrmann gibt es sogar ein ganz besonderes Happy End!
