About this listen

Saint Augustine is one of history's most prolific geniuses. With great eloquence and passion, his Confessions - a masterpiece of Western literature - explores enduring questions that continue to stir millions. Perhaps the most moving record of a soul's journey to grace, Confessions appears midway in Saint Augustine's prodigious body of theological writings and remains his most influential work.©1991 Henry Chadwick (P)2007 Recorded Books, LLC

This is worth it.

I highly recommend this audio book. It is full of food for thought. I mostly listen to Confessions when I lay down to sleep. Sometimes it takes me quite a while to fall asleep, but listening to this makes it enjoyable.

Excellent!

This is a beautiful translation, and is wonderfully read by the narrarator. I can't think of St. Augustine without thinking of this guys voice. He reads in a meditative way if that makes any sense, without going too fast or too slow. The sound quality is excellent!

Augustine the Rock Star

This translation and reading of Augustine is brilliant. Where this book is weak in its translation it makes up for in the narration of Richard Ferrone. Ferrone does a great job of reading this book with great authority and makes the heavy words of Augustine enjoyable.

Excellent material, disappointed by a technology issue

I enjoyed the book very much and found this weighty material more easily understood listening to modern English.

The only complaint I have is the chapters/books are jumbled together within the tracks. For example the second track, titled chapter two, begins with the end of book two, book three starts at 19 minutes, and at one hour book four is introduced and carries over into the third track, titled chapter three. The writing is so dense one wants to stop and digest and review what’s being said. Therefore, it would be better if there were tracks for each chapter in all twelve books.

A Profound Confession From a Great Man of God

What made the experience of listening to Confessions the most enjoyable?

The narrator of this story has a great grasp of the tone and expression contained in St. Augustine's Confessions. He seamlessly renders this story with great emotion exactly as I imagine Augustine himself speaking it. To top off the experience, the narrator did not try to over-emphasize the "poetic rendering" style so often associated with these kinds of classics.

Most profound is that the confessions of Augustine are a truly beautiful piece of work from a man truly inspired of God.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Confessions?

The humility and immense transformation expressed in the mind and heart of Augustine as he relays his confessions.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This work has helped open my eyes to the nature of what confession means before a great and mighty God.

Any additional comments?

I strongly recommend this book to all Christians from every walk of life; no matter your association, this book will help you in the pursuit of truth we each must follow.

A well read spiritual and human classi

The Confessions is one of the most important books ever written. St.Augustine had a profound impact on the development of Western culture and thought and theology. The narrator does a good job helping the reader hear what the Saint was trying to convey.

Perfection

The late Henry Chadwick's English translation of the Confessions will likely never be excelled. It is an exceptional piece of scholarship, of the highest literary standard, from one of Oxford's supremely gifted. And what a brilliant move to present this audiobook with the compelling voice of Richard Ferrone (whom I came to appreciate in the John Sandford novels, a decidedly different genre)! Mr. Ferrone renders the subtle prose of Augustine flawlessly and sympathetically; in my imagination Augustine will henceforth sound like Ferrone! This combination gets my vote for the Nobel Prize of Spoken Literature. The best Audible book ever.

Make time for this book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I've tried reading "Confessions" on two separate occasions, but failed miserably because the content is so deep and rich... and I didn't have time or energy to persevere. But the audible book is fantastic! I can listen on my Kindle while getting ready in the morning, switch over to my iPhone app in the car traveling to work, and pick up where I left off on my way home, and listen on my Kindle while making dinner. I'll finish this audiobook in less than three days and am excited to one day see the new film, "Restless Heart" based on this book. The narrator does an EXCELLENT job... he doesn't just read the words on the page, the feelings and emotions seep in and enrich your listening experience.

What did you like best about this story?

This reads like a modern book. Human nature remains the same after 1600 years--St. Augustine could be someone you pass on the street, supermarket, or see at the post office.

What about Richard Ferrone’s performance did you like?

He knows what he's reading and he reads it well. I feel as if St. Augustine were talking directly to ME.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

St. Augustine's conversion event actually brought tears to my eyes. Not too convenient because I was driving at the time, but the moment was portrayed brilliantly by Richard Ferrone.

Any additional comments?

If someone doesn't have time to read "Confessions" I absolutely recommend they listen to this audiobook. The spiritual nourishment I've received from this book is immeasurable! I only gave it a 5-star rating because there wasn't anything higher.

Very good listen, loved it!

Although, I am not a Catholic, this book, nonetheless captivated my attention. St. Augustan comes off as a very humble man. I was fascinated by his insights.
