About this listen

Prehistoric Terror Returns to Western Canada!

The sequel to Katie Berry's Award-winning novel, Claw: A Canadian Thriller is here!

Their shattered town rebuilt, the residents of Lawless, BC, are once again ready to get on with their lives, the terrors from the past now behind them. A winter solstice festival is planned to celebrate both the holidays and the townspeople's determination to get things done.

However, human nature and mother nature have different ideas. Between their caprices, Lawless is once again thrust into a maelstrom of avarice, vengeance, and horrors from out of time.

Battered by a huge snowstorm, the small mountain town must pull together and fight for their very lives against vicious predators from both the past and present now wreaking havoc in the surrounding valley.

this is very edge of seat book. Thrilling, I glad I was intrigued by the cover then the synopsis of it made me want to know, Two books I have to find out what else and what happened in the 1800s. Worth reading.

Should be only 4 hrs

The author could have cut this book in half. It would have been 5 star. She tried making many strings with different characters then pull them together, but it didn’t work. First book was 5 stars.

Repeat performance

I is a carbon copy of the first book. Enjoyable but not worth a Credit. Dialogue felt simplistic and pretty corny. Narrator did a good job.

Solid Evolution of Book 1

The bassline is the same as book 1, but the added storybeats make it an exciting read/listen. No notes.

Good book but I liked first better

A good book but not as suspenseful and action-packed as the first one, but is still a good read.

Not quite the original, but great nonetheless

After reading her debut novel, CLAW: A Canadian Thriller, I became a huge Katie Berry fan. The book had fantastic atmosphere and had an excellent storyline to boot. Katie went on to write the ABANDONED series, which I was critical of. The storyline was superb, but I was irritated by the juvenile conversation between the two main characters. I was also unhappy that the story was broken into four parts which made each book appear more a novella than a novel. I read the first two books in the series and decided not to continue any further. I did not get invested in the characters as the stories were too short. Frankly, I couldn't remember any of the characters' names when I started reading the second book.

This brings me to CLAW: Resurgence. I picked up the book from Audible with a bit of hesitancy due to my frustration with the ABANDONED series. However, I should not have been concerned. I immediately "reconnected" with the characters. They were all there: Austen, Christine, Trip and, of course, the nasty monsters.

So, why does the story not get five stars? Well, firstly, the book is not quite up to the standard of the first book in the series. Don't get me wrong, it is great, but the novelty has worn a bit. It was also not as atmospheric. The first book in the series had me shivering down here in warm South Africa - this book not so much so. Secondly, the same criticism I have for the ABANDONED series also reared its head here. The dialogue, at times, is terrible. It is filled with cliches, and all the characters are simply too "nice". Even when things are turning out badly, the characters still have time to come up with quips. The dialogue portrays them as overly friendly. The narrator, Alex Know, is brilliant, but to some extent, he exasperates the issue with the voices that he uses for the characters. The final thing that I didn't enjoy was how the characters kept talking to animals and other inanimate objects. The characters talk to bears, guns, cars, snow-ploughs, etc., as if they are human beings. One or two of these incidents is okay, but the extent was too much.

Will I read the next book in the series should there be another? Of course! I only wish Katie could tighten her dialogue writing to match the gritty and scary storyline. It is frustrating to see such a talented storyteller erode the quality of her books by poor dialogue writing. But keep them coming, Katie. I can't wait to see what happens next in Lawless.
