About this listen

On New Year's Day, a dog finds a bone in the Hollywood Hills - and unearths a murder committed more than 20 years earlier. It's a cold case, but for Detective Harry Bosch, it stirs up memories of his childhood as an orphan. He can't let it go. As the investigation takes Bosch deeper into the past, a beautiful rookie cop brings him alive in the present. No official warning can break them apart - or prepare Bosch for the explosions when the case takes a few hard turns. Suddenly all of L.A. is in an uproar, and Bosch, fighting to keep control, is driven to the brink of an unimaginable decision.

Please note: This is the abridged edition. An unabridged version is also available.

Michael Connelly does it again

I haven't read a Bosch series novel I didn't enjoy. There is always just the right amount of every emotion conveyed.

The Bosch enigma continues

It's fascinating to me how the Bosch character can come across as having such a different personality depending who the reader is. I wonder if some of it might be inconsistencies in the writing, but it is hard for me to tell. Any way you cut, regardless of the reader's interpretation presented through tone and emphasis, Bosch is the architypal anti-hero that resonates so deeply with me, and I suspect with virtually everyone. Connelly does his homework and brings a gripping, multilayer story every time in this series.

Great Story

Another great story but I have to say the background music was a distraction multiple times.

Warning: abridged version

When I purchased this I did not realize it is abridged. Also, I bought this version because I think Len Cariou is absolutely the best narrator for the Bosch series, but this book changes many things about the characters of Bosch and Edgar and the reading reflects this. The crime story is interesting but if you like Harry and Edgar, this will be disappointing.

Monotone voice...

Struggled to finish. The voice was too monotone so my mind would wander. I've never had that happen before with other books...

Short version!!! Weird music

Love Michael Connelly, and love the Harry Bosch character. I have already watched the TV episode based on this book and was surprised at the differences in the story, in a good way! Very much worthwhile story.

However, the music in this production is strange and at times hampers the story. There are times of no and times of too loud music. No jazz, which would make sense since that is Harry’s preference. Instead, the music is a strange New Age style, like you hear during a massage.

I didn’t realize when I purchased, but this is ABRIDGED and only has half the content of the full book. My mistake, but I’m bummed that I wasted money on this version.
