About this listen
Masterful in its simplicity, Chronicle in Stone is a touching coming-of-age story and a testament to the perseverance of the human spirit. Surrounded by the magic of beautiful women and literature, a boy must endure the deprivations of war as he suffers the hardships of growing up. His sleepy country has just thrown off centuries of tyranny, but new waves of domination inundate his city. Through the boy's eyes, we see the terrors of World War II as he witnesses fascist invasions, allied bombings, partisan infighting, and the many faces of human cruelty - as well as the simple pleasures of life. Evacuating to the countryside, he expects to find an ideal world full of extraordinary things, but discovers instead an archaic backwater where a severed arm becomes a talisman and deflowered girls mysteriously vanish. Woven between the chapters of the boy's story are tantalizing fragments of the city's history. As the devastation mounts, the fragments lose coherence, and we perceive firsthand how the violence of war destroys more than just buildings and bridges.

Imagine it were possible to bring the characters from a book to life. Not like when you listen to an audiobook with such enchantment that the characters seem to jump off the pages and into your bedroom...but for real. Imagine they could actually climb out of the pages and into our world. Then imagine if those characters brought their world into ours.

Story
Bradbury's Mars is a place of hope, dreams, and metaphor - of crystal pillars and fossil seas - where a fine dust settles on the great, empty cities of a silently destroyed civilization. It is here the invaders have come to despoil and commercialize, to grow and to learn - first a trickle, then a torrent, rushing from a world with no future toward a promise of tomorrow. The Earthman conquers Mars...and then is conquered by it, lulled by dangerous lies of comfort and familiarity, and enchanted by the lingering glamour of an ancient, mysterious native race.

Winner of the 1973 National Book Award, Gravity's Rainbow is a postmodern epic, a work as exhaustively significant to the second half of the 20th century as Joyce's Ulysses was to the first. Its sprawling, encyclopedic narrative and penetrating analysis of the impact of technology on society make it an intellectual tour de force.

Story
The life of Urbain Martien - artist, soldier, survivor of World War I - lies contained in two notebooks he left behind when he died in 1981. His grandson, a writer, retells his story, the notebooks giving him the impetus to imagine his way into the locked chambers of Urbain's memory. He vividly recounts a whole life: Urbain as the child of a lowly church painter, retouching his father's work; dodging death in a foundry; fighting in the war that altered the course of history, and much more.

Remember Us is a look back at the lost world of the shtetl: a wise Zayde offering prophetic and profound words to his grandson, the rich experience of Shabbos, and the treasure of a loving family. All this is torn apart with the arrival of the Holocaust, beginning a crucible fraught with twists and turns so unpredictable and surprising that they defy any attempt to find reason within them. Through the eyes of 91-year-old Holocaust survivor Martin Small, we learn that these priceless memories that are too painful to remember are also too painful to forget.

Story
For eight weeks in 1945, as Berlin fell to the Russian army, a young woman kept a daily record of life in her apartment building and among its residents. The anonymous author depicts her fellow Berliners in all their humanity, as well as their cravenness, corrupted first by hunger and then by the Russians. A Woman in Berlin tells of the complex World War II relationship between civilians and an occupying army and the shameful indignities to which women in a conquered city are always subject—the mass rape suffered by all, regardless of age or infirmity.

The interesting way a history of that time WWII in Albania
So I liked this after figuring out the story is from the point of view t of view of a young teenager who is seeing things through a different lens than an adult. I really liked it a lot. Im an American living in Kosovo among ethnic Albanians.

dark, deep, and Lasting
this book is haunting and harrowing. the narrator is unreliable but the images he describes are powerful that point yet. I love how the narrator gives magical purpose to the horrors he sees, and how people are the stones that bear the Chronicles.

A Haunting Book Beautifully Narrated
Ismail Kadare’s Chronicle in Stone is a haunting, beautifully narrated book. I could hardly believe that one narrator could do all of those voices. The coming of age story amidst war and occupation by multiple countries was achingly entertaining and raw. I would recommend this book.

A child’s stained worldview
Ismail Kadare is indeed a masterful writer and this is a captivating work. However, I felt that two important points were missing or overlooked. The boy, who knows how to read, only refers to school once and doesn’t account for how he has acquired his knowledge. In addition, I missed that in all settings, which are so vivid and descriptive, scent is quite absent.
I appreciate Ismail’s attempt to show how the boy’s insight on the reality of the time is impartial, but the fact that in the boy’s interactions are very limited to only his close family circle which is made of only muslims, most likely who were Turks left over from the Ottoman invasion. The consciousness of the conquerer is deep in the boy’s attitude which is even described in how the boy sees the Greeks who have come during the famine.
The reading is pretty good, but I wish the reader had done his study of the names and the certain native words and pronounced them properly. The mispronunciation takes away from the whole performance.
Overall, this is a very good book.
