Das Märchen bildet in China kein streng gesondertes Gebiet, da das "Wunderbare" in China noch zum normalen Weltlauf gehört. So herrscht in diesen Geschichten meisten das einzelne Bild, die einzelne Situation vor, die durch ihre Auflösung erzieherischen Charakter hat. Die Verbindung der Motive zu einer geschlossenen Handlung ist dem Kunstmärchen vorenthalten, von denen es in China wahre Perlen gibt.
Bei der Auswahl und Zusammenstellung der Chinesischen Märchen wurde besonders auf die mündliche Überlieferung wert gelegt und, dass die Märchen aus China stammen oder nach chinesischen Maßstäben umgeformt wurden.
