About this listen

In the segregated South of the mid-1900s, 14-year-old Nell bears witness to a world that embraces the oppression of women. She is fascinated with the prospect of being an independent person - but when she turns 16, she is married off and brought to the city of Boston as a bride.

Nell is a shy girl who must quickly learn how to be a wife and mother. She quickly discovers that she must acquire new skills to navigate the unknown territory of the North, as well as her relationship with her husband, Henry, who is controlling and emotionally abusive. After giving birth to three children, her body begins to fail her, and Henry, concerned for her health, pulls away from her physically. But this void of intimacy drives Nell into the arms of another man.

It’s through her encounter with Charles in the church kitchen, at the point when she is most vulnerable, that Nell finds escape from her depressed life with Henry. The cost, though, is another pregnancy. When Charles finds out the baby is his, at first it appears he plans to leave Nell; ultimately, however, his love for her brings him back.

Great Book

This was a great read that depicted the issue of child brides during this era. Artfully written with an outstanding ending. Awesome author with incredible descriptive language. Couldn’t put it down.

I loved this book and the narrator! Such a good (at times sad) story… I didn’t want it to end. I hope there’s a sequel!!

Wonderfully written

This book was beautifully written. I enjoyed the story and how you were taken back in time to experience all the main character lived through. I loved how she described everything so you could imagine it. Great book!

Glad I selected this title! ❤️

I almost passed this one up, not sure if it was something I could relate to since I was brought up on a farm in the north, and I happen to be a Caucasian. I am so glad I listened to this book!! I could relate to the farm and being poor, being in a controlling marriage, and people judging. This is a novel but I could see where this could’ve happened to somebody somewhere. I loved how she overcame all of the challenges and it looks like she is going to have a happy ending. I only wish there were more! Maybe a 2nd book? The the narration was amazing as well. I highly recommend, and I will be looking for more books from this author.

Wrong title

The book was ok. I did feel like the title was wrong. Nell was 16 years old when she married. In that time, people got married around that age. Now the husband, appeared to really want a family.. I was surprised the way the book ended. Overall it was good book. 😊

Cute Historical Fiction…

A quick read that pulls you into the characters, time period and excitement. Still have questions about some of the back story but for this to be self-published, I throughly enjoyed it.
