About this listen

John McCain and Mark Salter have written three acclaimed best sellers, but Character Is Destiny may be their most influential and enduring book yet, a work for parents to share with their children and for Americans of all ages to read for inspiration and guidance.

McCain has been called "one of the most inspiring public figures of his generation" by The Washington Post. In Character Is Destiny, he shows us why, by telling the stories of celebrated historical figures and lesser-known heroes whose values exemplify the best of the human spirit. He illustrates these qualities with moving stories of triumph against the odds, righteousness in the face of iniquity, hope in adversity, and sacrifices for a cause greater than self-interest.

In Character Is Destiny, we meet heroes of exemplary character. This book is John McCain's moving and eloquent tribute to men and women who have lived truthfully, and whose stories will stir the hearts of young and old alike and help prepare us for the hard work of choosing our own destinies.

Critic reviews

"Amid much speculation concerning his plans for 2008, McCain has made a declaration of values that liberals can embrace as readily as conservatives." (Publishers Weekly)

Inspirational

Narration: clear, resonant, compelling

Content: prologue is in itself worth cost of purchase. More importantly, what is said therein is at least as important as the inspirational stories told.

Exceptional book about the people John most admired. I will now read biographies of at least a half dozen of these amazing people.

It was OK, but not outstanding.

Where does Character Is Destiny rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is in the lower middle somewhere. I have plowed through some worse books, but I have been excited and stimulated by more. I did not find this was all that exciting and stimulating. It is not like I want my money back, but overall I would have to say only that it was OK.

Love anything John McCain

In my opinion this book should be recommended reading for pre teens and teens.
I didn’t finish but recommend gifting to teens.

A must read!

I loved this book and think everyone should read it! It was a wonderful mix of biographies: historical, inspirational, spiritual. Great for middle school children and high schoolers or people who love to learn. The book provides enough about each subject to spark a greater interest and lead to more in depth reading!

Motivational and Uplifting

This book was a joy to listen to. I was inspired by each of the stories. The book's content gets 5 stars, but the format was a bit challenging. The divisions for fast forwarding and rewinding were way too far apart. But I still recommend this book whole heartedly. It is one I will listen to again and again. A real keeper.
