Publisher's summary
Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Russo's first stand-alone novel in a decade is a gripping story about the abiding yet complex power of friendship.
One beautiful September day, three 66-year-old men convene on Martha's Vineyard, friends ever since meeting in college in the 1960s. They couldn't have been more different then, or even today - Lincoln's a commercial real estate broker, Teddy a tiny-press publisher and Mickey an ageing musician. But each man holds his own secrets, in addition to the monumental mystery that none of them has ever stopped puzzling over since 1971: the disappearance of their friend Jacy. Now, decades later, the distant past interrupts the present as the truth about what happened to Jacy finally emerges, forcing the men to reconsider everything they thought they knew about each other.
Shot through with Russo's trademark comedy and humanity, Chances Are also introduces a new level of suspense and menace that will quicken the listener's heartbeat throughout this absorbing saga of how friendship's bonds are every bit as constricting and rewarding as those of family.
For both longtime fans and lucky newcomers, Chances Are is a stunning demonstration of a highly acclaimed author deepening and expanding his remarkable achievement.
Critic reviews
"Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Richard Russo balances suspense with comedy in this gripping tale." (TIME)
"There's much to enjoy in Richard Russo's typically nuanced portrait of three childhood friends...[a] fine-grained exploration of troubled, small-town masculinity.... Russo's prose is so quietly melodious you can almost hear it singing." (Daily Mail)

In spite of its battlefield specificity, The Art of War has found new life in the modern age, with leaders in fields as wide and far-reaching as world politics, human psychology, and corporate strategy finding valuable insight in its timeworn words.

This newer edition of the King James Bible published in 1769 is usually preferred by most that read it over the older 1611 version. This 1769 edition is highly sought after due to being more reader/listener friendly than the 1611 since many typos were fixed.... They said write what you know so that's what I did. I wrote dirty, I wrote erotic, I wrote the truth. And then they called me a liar. But it's not me who's lying, it's them. Our story isn't for everyone. It's not even for us. So if you're looking for the fairy tale and the stupid prince on his dumb white horse, move along. You've got a hold of the wrong book. This is not your story, this is not your life, and this is not your opportunity to dip your frightened little toe into the dark pool of water and "try new things" and then pull it out and decide... #NotForMe.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

One of Russo's best--a fine novel
Right from the start, this novel is thoroughly engaging. Russo plays to his strengths: good story; well-defined and interesting characters; lots of insightful psychology and cultural observations; and some entertainingly spiky dialogue. I think he gets inside the heads of men better than he does of women. The narrator is solid without being brilliant, but he doesn't need to be with a novel this entertaining.
