About this listen
1. He has a stuttering problem, particularly around boobs and belly buttons.
2. He battles Attention Deficit Disorder every minute of every day...unless he gets distracted.
3. He's a virgin, mostly because he's no good at talking to girls (see number 1).
4. He's about to start high school.
5. He's totally not ready.
Join Carter for his freshman year, where he'll search for sex, love, and acceptance anywhere he can find it. In the process, he'll almost kill a trombone player, face off with his greatest nemesis, suffer a lot of blood loss, narrowly escape death, run from the cops (not once, but twice), get caught up in a messy love triangle, meet his match in the form of a curvy drill teamer, and surprise the hell out of everyone, including himself.

Story
Matt Gratton and his two best friends, Sean and Coop, always set themselves a summer-time goal. This year’s? To see a real-live naked girl for the first time. As far as Matt is concerned, they’d have better luck finding the lost city of Atlantis. But seeing a girl in the buff starts to seem like child’s play compared to the other summertime goal Matt sets for himself: to swim the 100-yard butterfly (the hardest stroke known to God or man) in order to impress Kelly West, the hot new girl. So what if he can’t manage a single lap, let alone four?

Story
If there's one thing seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter knows, it's that a real man takes care of his family. As the son of a former gang legend, Mav does that the only way he knows how: dealing for the King Lords. With this money he can help his mom, who works two jobs while his dad's in prison. Life's not perfect, but with a fly girlfriend and a cousin who always has his back, Mav's got everything under control. Until, that is, Maverick finds out he's a father. But it's not so easy to sling dope, finish school, and raise a child.

A bag of chips. That's all 16-year-old Rashad is looking for at the corner bodega. What he finds instead is a fist-happy cop, Paul Galluzzo, who mistakes Rashad for a shoplifter, mistakes Rashad's pleadings that he's stolen nothing for belligerence, mistakes Rashad's resistance to leave the bodega as resisting arrest, mistakes Rashad's every flinch at every punch the cop throws as further resistance and refusal to STAY STILL as ordered.

Blue Collar Comedy star Bill Engvall is just a guy. He's been one his whole life. He can't help it; he was born that way. And that makes him an expert on the subject. For the record, here's the official definition of a guy: a person who doesn't think before he speaks. He can't. He's not that deep. Because a guy has only three basic needs: eating, sleeping, and sex. That's it. Just a Guy chronicles a lifetime in pursuit of those needs.

Kurt is a talented but emotionally damaged football player. Danny is a rising star on the gymnastics team, an outsider in a high school where the football team rules. But the two form an unlikely friendship, and when one member of the gym team is viciously assaulted by the quarterback and his cronies, Kurt rises to his defense and challenges the entrenched stereotypes of high-school sports. This is that rare book that authentically captures the voices, fierce loyalties, and harsh justice of teenage boys.

Cameron Bates (Cam) could have almost any girl at Franklin High School...except for the one he wants. Unfortunately Bebe seems to be immune to his flirty charm and good looks, which means one of two things: a) she's completely oblivious to how he feels, or b) she's just not into him. If that's the case, declaring his love would be disastrous for their friendship. Bianca Barnes (Bebe) has a huge problem: the universe hates her. Every time she admits feelings for a boy, he ends up falling for her sweet, popular, and beautiful sister Beth.

While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world - as they know it - apart.

Funny and so believable!
So many of the YA books I've recently read, or read when I was a teen, was told from a teen girl's perspective. I find it extremely refreshing to now be reading books from the teen guy's point of view. It's incredibly entertaining! As a female, I had no idea what teen guys thought or felt, but if it's anything like Carter in this novel - and I'd be disappointed if it wasn't! - then their minds go a lot of place in a few minutes. And it's hilarious! The character of Carter and 'his boys' left me giggling in public and laughing aloud like a mad person when alone. Brent Crawford did a wonderful job of cutting the angst of growing up and replacing it with hilarious, embarrassing, moments that will leave you shaking your head, mumbling 'You are such an idiot!' a lot, to wanting to fight your way into the novel and give Carter a tight hug.
As for Nick Podehl narrating this audiobook. He. Is. PERFECT! He just is. He brings such enthusiasm and realism to the characters that I'm a little jealous that he clearly has so much fun doing this job! This is exactly the genre he belongs in reading, and he does an amazing job at it. May he continue to be given these books to narrate. He's great at it!
Worth the credit if you don't mind being stuck inside a teen guy's head for a few hours and just want something a little light and a little teen-angsty and a lot funny!

So funny..
Yet another hilarious coming of age read skillfully narrated by the talented Nick Podehl. Author Brent Crawford doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel with this one, but I’m a sucker and true fan of this genre when it's executed well and CARTER FINALLY GETS IT is funny, heartwarming and very well written.
William Carter is a fairly popular, good sweet loveable kid. Although he has ADD and a slight stress (and pretty girl) induced stutter, none of that is Carter’s real problem. So what is?... Well he’s also a clueless 14 year old male starting his first year of high school. And what a freshman year it is; a true rollercoaster to say the least. I highly recommend joining him through all the ups and downs of school, sports, girls, bullies, friends, vicious dogs, illegal parties, cops, cars, love and loss.
CARTER FINALLY GETS IT is chock full of life lessons and personal growth and a ton of amusing, yet embarrassing and realistic “moments” that will have you grinning from start to finish. This is a read guaranteed to entertain and one that is sure to be adored by fans of similar books like SWIM THE FLY, SPUD and BEAT THE BAND. Can’t wait to start the sequel.

Excellent!!
This book was selected by my book club Mocha Girls Read as our book of the month for August. I have been thinking about picking this one up. Now I finally got a reason. Thank you book club.
Louisa is your average everyday young lady growing up in tiny village with an ordinary or more like a boring life. That is until she loses her coffee shop job and has to find a new job quickly. As one of the few bread winners in her family making an income is extremely important to the well being of the four generations living under one roof. When the job placement agency sends her on a interview for a care taking position, Louisa gets it and that is when everything changes. In comes Will, a rude and hard to get along quadriplegic who was once an well traveled adventurist. Will and Louisa don't get along but that is not saying much for and about Will. He has been in a deep depression living in the annex of his parents home with 24 hour care since he has tried to commit suicide. I know this sounds really heavy and deep and it is. Not the hot summer beach read but it was a great read. The story has moments of light and laughter here and there. Louisa's boyfriend is too funny but shhh! don't tell him, he thinks he is serious. And Louisa completely reminds me of Bridget Jones but a younger version.
There are so many controversial and conversation tidbits in this books. The issue of a young woman living in a small town and not having any experiences outside her small world, the issue of quality of life, and the big one is the issue of assisted suicides. That is THE heavy and controversial topic the book slaps you with.
From what I have heard a few people cried when they read this book. Is there something wrong with me? I didn't cry. I didn't get choked up. I felt sad and let down but not to the point of crying. Sorry. I am a softy but this didn't do it for me.
The narrators did a good job. I appreciated having a variety of voices for the different sections in the book. Overall, I really like the story. Will and Louisa are really well written and thought out characters. The ending I am not going to tell you about but I was hoping for a completely different ending. I am happy there were some loose ends tighten up here and there because that would have just been plain rude if it wasn't. If you finish the book you'll know what I mean. I think the author did a great job with this topic and made it interesting from a new point of view.
