About this listen

Hostile salvage confirmed.

Rhett Calibos is a bounty scrapper, his life as an indentured soldier a welcome alternative to imprisonment on a penal colony. A man haunted by his past, Rhett throws himself into the work, his only sanctuary. Sokol Targe is the leader of a mech warrior squad stationed aboard an ancient and deadly warship and conducts violent raids on behalf of a Red List commune. Cast away from corporate society, they have embraced the ravager way of life.

As these troubled men endure furious combat across the ragged edges of civilization, neither of them realize they've become entangled in the deeper mysteries of necrospace.

It's a hard universe, and nobody gets away clean.

Good for what it is

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This is a lot like the previous book, in that there is little plot but tons of great action. A lot like a sci fi version of The Expendibles. Persephone Rose did a great job on the narration and the action was good. All in all, it was definitely entertaining, just nothing to write home about.

Space Combat

This book had a lot of action, and a good story. There were times I had to go back and forth to figure out where I was, but overall I really enjoyed listening to this book and will definitely be buying the previous books in the series as well. The narrator was good and represented the characters well. This is worth a credit.

Great Sci-fi!

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. When I first got the book I didn't realize it was the 5th book in a series, but surprisingly it was perfectly fine as a standalone. The story is engaging and the world(universe) seems well built. The narration was very good and the narrator brought all characters to life.

Rough, Gritty, Sci-fi,

Carrion Duty
Necrospace, Book 5
By: Sean-Michael Argo
Narrated by: Persephone Rose
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I have not listened to the previous books but that didn't seem to bother how I understood this book.
This was a gritty, rough, mech sci-fi, that told a story of men on the edge of necrospace, fighting with limited resources and limited knowledge of what is really happening.
It is an intriguing book, hard core, and that isn't for everyone. Lots of combat.
The book jumped around a bit and it was hard to focus at times. I love sci-fi but sometimes it was just too much combat all at one time.
The narrator was excellent!!!! I think the narration helped the book tremendously. I can't imagine trying to read this and stay focused! Too much!

Great story!

Now I wish I had listened to/read the first four books in the series. Top shelf in gender with very good character development, and a strong, driven story. I highly recommend this series, and I will be acquiring the rest of the series! Now for the obligatory: "I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review."

Good gritty Sci-Fi

This Blade Runner like book is a entertaining mix of a tough gritty future dominated by dark and immoral Corporations. It is not original but is a enjoyable read for those who enjoy this type of story.

The narrator did his best with the material to keep the interest of the listener.

Interesting take on interplanetary imperialism

Carrion Duty explores a darker science fiction setting controlled by corporate greed. We follow two main characters whose lives are greatly influenced by this. The story has some interesting sci fi concepts regarding setting but much of it is rushed and does not allow for full immersion into this world of necrospace. There are also many characters that can be confusing to keep track of and combined with the rushed world building make the story difficult to follow.

However, the narrator does a great job with the story giving life to the rushed characters and makes the action scenes exciting. The story is read at a good pace and is pleasant to listen to. Overall the narration and interesting take on interplanetary corporations and imperialism make it worth a listen.

Gritty space opera

Take Star Wars, cross it with starship troopers and then mix in the merchant marines, foreign legion, and it’s kind of like that. Take a group of criminals who are doing their tour under a corporate contract for their sentences to be commuted they come across some situations that are far beyond the norms and could make them rich enough to buy their contracts out. But with great rewards come tremendous risks. Will the danger be too much? Will they survive?

❤️

I kinda jumped in halfway through this series. I need to go back and listen to the rest. I enjoyed this book. Excellent sci-fi with a great narrator, this is definitely a series I’d like to listen to.

Just didn't work for me.

Carrion Duty is the 5th book Necrospace saga and since I hadn't read the previous books I expected to perhaps be a little lost at first. I had a lot of problems with the book, but being lost wasn't one of them. While there are a decent amount of fairly well done action scenes the book suffers in from numerous problems. First and foremost there is way too much exposition and info dumps. Now I don't know if some of the stuff is rehashing of the previous books or not, but I definitely felt it was unnecessary. Giving detailed backstories of characters that play on bit parts seems ... well as I said unnecessary. There are also huge sections where we are given massive info dumps on the politics of the universe, and while interesting the information does little to nothing to advance the story, if anything it merely slows the story down. It's clear Mr. Argo has spent a lot of time world building and I don't know if he wants to justify the time he spent by adding all of it into his books, but as I said it doesn't advance the story at all, only slows it down. Speaking of the story, it doesn't really feel like the actual story of the book gets going until almost 2 hours in. Judging by the reviews on audible and amazon there are definitely people who have enjoyed the series, but it just didn't click with me.

The book is narrated by Persephone Rose and I have to say he did an excellent job. He does a fantastic job of bringing the action scenes to life.
