Story
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name is hidden from all he and Dunk encounter. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits. Emma is perfectly content with her life and sees no need for either love or marriage; nothing however delights her more than matchmaking her fellow residents of Highbury. Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Story
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Our favorite moments from Carnival Row: Tangle in the Dark
All is fae in love and war
If, like me, you’ve binged Amazon’s fantasy series Carnival Row, created by Travis Beacham and René Echevarria, and are itching for more, Tangle in the Dark is a must-listen. This steamy Audible Original is a prequel told through the eyes of Tourmaline Larou, who fans of the show will know as the audacious, brothel-dwelling bff and former lover of fellow faerie Vignette Stonemoss. It’s an enchanting tale of first love unfolding despite class differences, personal growth, and love lost that satisfyingly intersects with pivotal scenes in the streaming series. The story also foreshadows the war to come as the human species seeks to brutally colonize otherworldly beings.
About the Creator
Stephanie K. Smith is a film and television writer drawn most to character drama and grounded fantasy. In addition to her work on the first and second seasons of Carnival Row, she was on the writing staff of Genius: Picasso which was nominated for seven Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series, and has written both comedy and drama pilots for CBS, FTVS, Legendary Television, SuperDeluxe and The CW. Her feature film work includes adapting acclaimed author Laurie Halse Anderson’s The Impossible Knife of Memory and Amber Smith’s best-seller The Way I Used to Be, among others. Stephanie graduated from NYU, earned her MFA at USC Film School, and lives in Los Angeles, where she recently remarried and is raising a brilliant, handsome, and charming son (about whom she is in no way biased).
About the Performer
Karla Crome is enjoying success as a scriptwriter for stage and television as well as a blossoming career in acting. She starred in the brilliant BBC2 drama, Murder, which won a BAFTA for Best Single Drama, she has been the standout actor in her other lead roles in ITV's The Level, Misfits, Prisoner’s Wives, Under the Dome (Steven Spielberg), Sky's You, Me and the Apocalypse, Lightfields, and Hit and Miss with Chloe Sevigny. It was this show that caught the attention of Screen International, who profiled Karla in the prestigious annual Stars of Tomorrow portfolio.
Recent projects include The Victim for BBC1 with Kelly MacDonald (Trainspotting) and John Hannah and Vita and Virginia alongside Elizabeth Debicki and Gemma Arterton. Karla stars in the epic dark series Carnival Row for Amazon Prime opposite Cara Delevingne, Indira Varma, and Orlando Bloom. It has been commissioned for a second season.Theater credits include the National Theatre's sensational reimagining of Amadeus by Peter Shaffer, well-known for his play Equus; Linda at the Royal Court Theatre opposite Noma Dumezweni and most recently, in the UK premiere of Claire Baron’s award-winning play Dance Nation at the Almeida Theatre.
As a writer, Karla won an Edinburgh Fringe Festival Award for her critically acclaimed stage play, Mush and Me, which she created and penned about the forbidden love between a Jewish girl and Muslim boy. She is currently developing this for screen. Further writing credits include Sky One’s Hooten and the Lady starring Ophelia Lovibond and Jane Seymour, Safe starring Michael C. Hall, Freddie Thorp, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin, and The Stranger, both for Netflix. Further projects in development include a television series called Boom Box for Channel 4 (Urban Myth) and writing an episode of Howard Overman's new series The One for Netflix in addition to a short film, a ghost story, which she will direct.

Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. On a dark, wintry day, Eliza Grey receives a mysterious letter from her ailing Nana Mora begging her to come for a visit. This is an easy "Yes". Eliza has always preferred Nana Mora's beach cottage on St. Simons Island to the apartment she and her mom call home in the city. Having no knowledge of Carnival Row, this story was not very engaging to me. It didn't seem like a standalone book, and I found myself just waiting for it to end. The narrator was fantastic, but I didn't think the storyline held much interest.

Great Prequel!
This is a great prequel to the show, beautifully narrated, compelling story. LOVED IT! I watched the Prime series and really enjoyed it. Tourmaline and Vigni’s interaction and backstory was one that instantly intrigued me on the show. I was hoping we’d get to know more and I was over the moon when I saw this book!
Forewarning: I imagine this book is 100% better if you’ve watched the show. It’s a prequel that fills in blanks more than world building. For that reason I’d recommend watching 1st. There’s a scene at the end of the book I remember watching vividly that holds so much more meaning for me now, although the depth of emotion was portrayed very well by the actress playing Tourmaline.
100% recommend for those who’ve seen the show.

Well worth paying for, so happy it is free
Having watched only the first episode of the series, I must say I am glad I decided to wait on this audiobook before finishing the rest. It really sets up the first episode well and makes me look forward to finishing the rest.
That said, aside from the series, this is a marvelous stand alone fantasy novella and leaves you wanting more. Well written, good dialogue, and excellent first person narration. I will have to listen to a few more novels she has narrated... of which there are none, since the actress for Tourmaline, Karla Crome, did the narration, lol. Saved by the edit.
Best part, the roommate wars, always the best part of college.
Edit continued...well, this is the best novella I will read by an author who will probably only write another novella when her next project goes to film or television...hopefully that project gets picked up by Amazon as well.
