Joseph Thomas Sheridan “Le Fanu” (1814-1873)
Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu nació en Dublin el 28 de agosto de 1814. Sheridan Le Fanu nació en el seno de una familia acomodada. Su abuela, Alice Sheridan Le Fanu, y su tío abuelo, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, fueron dramaturgos, y su sobrina, Rhoda Broughton, novelista de éxito.
Estudió Derecho en el Trinity College de Dublín, donde fue nombrado auditor de la Sociedad Histórica. Pero a Le Fanu no le agradaban las leyes y se pasó al periodismo. A partir de ese momento y hasta su muerte publicó multitud de relatos. Desde 1861 hasta 1869, editó el Dublin University Magazine, que publicó muchos de sus trabajos por entregas, y también en el Dublin Evening Mail. Tan reacio a los viajes como lo fuera Baudelaire, parece ser que Sheridan Le Fanu nunca abandonó su Dublín natal.
En 1844 se casó con Susanna Bennett, con quien tuvo cuatro hijos. En el año 1858 ocurre un hecho que cambiaría su vida o por lo menos acentuaría su inclinación misantrópica de sus últimos años, su esposa muere, lo que genera al escritor una aversión al mundo exterior, encerrándose en su hogar a escribir dejando de lado todo contacto con la sociedad, ganándose así el apodo del "Príncipe Invisible". Es en esta época donde le Fanu escribió sus narraciones oscuras, creyendo ser acosado por espíritus de ultratumba, convencido de que en esas horas de penumbra los poderes ocultos son más fuertes, y las energías vitales más débiles, quedando así abierta una puerta para que puedan penetrar en nuestra alma.
Recluido en su hogar, alejado del mundo exterior y en un estado de pesimismo general, falleció el 7 de febrero de 1873, en Dublin. Tenía 58 años.
