About this listen

In this poignant debut loaded with humor, heartbreak, and Southern charm, old friends road-trip their way to solving a mystery and righting a long-ago wrong.

Sarah Martin had every intention of skipping her high school reunion. Once a popular girl and valedictorian, she's now pushing forty, divorced, and running a small bookstore in Nashville - not exactly an impressive life. But Sarah's best friend, Kristen, won't take no for an answer, and she won't let them return to Briley High without Roxanne, the missing third in their senior-high trio.

The beautiful and wild Roxanne - who listened to eighties rocker chicks, let anyone kiss her at parties, and dragged Sarah into plenty of trouble - disappeared just weeks before graduation. But Sarah's not so sure she wants to track her down. She knows Roxanne's departure was likely because of a betrayal - hers.

Along with their pal Jack, Sarah and Kristen embark on a quest in a beat-up old El Camino, once the center of their spring-break dreams, in search of Roxanne. But the road ahead is full of surprises that will force the friends to confront their pasts and consider the paths they've chosen - and the ones still waiting to be explored.

I didn't expect much, but ended up loving it.

I grabbed this one as I was running out the door for the weekend. I needed a Fun listen for the car this weekend and this one hit the spot. It was really good. In fact I recommended it to 3 friends over the weekend!

Disappointing

This is the story of a borderline alcoholic mean girl who never grew up approaching her 20 year high school reunion. Don't expect romance. Just expect a selfish, immature, emotionally stunted near forty year old still hung up on one decision she made 20 years ago. In the end she discovers no one else even cares about her mistake. They all moved on with their lives. So maybe she can too.

Enjoyable read boosted by the audio perfomer

A rare good read despite the fact that there's nothing particularly new or original in the story. It's difficult to find a book in the "light yet still has enough substance to keep you listening" category, a book where the "bad" isn't bad enough to make you want to open a vein, a book that doesn't have graphic violence and sex, etc.

As the book went on, I was a little surprised at the turn it took with an increasing emphasis on Sarah's longing for her high school days, despite the fact that at 38, she's successful and still young. I didn't relate much. At my age, I certainly long for the "youth" aspect, that sense of invincibility, the feeling that the world is still wide open, still full of undiscovered adventures, but I can't imagine wanting to be the person I was at 18. Who would want to erase all the personal growth and wisdom gained in the subsequent years?

Still, enough personal growth, fun characters, good dialogue, good writing, great audio performer.

I got it free with Kindle Unlimited, but it would have been worth a credit to me.

An entertaining story about friendship.

The story is told in 2 timelines - present day and 20 years ago when the characters are seniors in high school. I liked seeing the different perspective between the teen-aged characters and their adult selves. The audiobook was well done, but if you are easily distracted they it can sometimes be difficult knowing which timeline you are on.

Light and fluffy

A little more estrogen-laden drama than my typical read, but interesting for the insight into a trio of Southern women coming to grips with the relationship between their adult lives and their teen dreams. Enjoyed the Sewanee references, even if the author occasionally conflated Sewanee and Monteagle and obviously knew Shenanigans from the troubled award Cammack years.
Worth a read for Sewanee grads, Nashvillians, and women approaching their 40s with still lingering issues from their adolescence.
