About this listen

In the land of moss, magnolias, and bayous, ghost stories suffuse the landscape like mist on a moonlit swamp. Swamp ghosts, hot-tempered villains, and tricksters once lived there, and live on today in such blood-chilling stories as the six in this collection.

Editorial reviews

These Cajun stories from the swampy backcountry of Louisiana are creepy and blood-chilling. J.J. Reneaux knows her craft well and takes her time developing these six stories of ghosts and werewolves. From "Half-Man" to "The Ghost of Jean Lafitte," the medley of yarns and legends runs the gamut from the unfamiliar to the well-known. Reneaux's Cajun dialect is quite understandable, and it's not difficult to grasp the stories after adjusting to Reneaux's rhythm and pace. The sound effects generally add to the flavor of this collection. The original slide guitar music by Mark Maxwell is good and used with flawless effect. Great for kids who like such scary stories, ages 8 and up.

Critic reviews

"An absolutely wonderful storyteller." (Vancouver Folk Festival)

Excellent retelling of classic scary stories!

This is perfect for Elementary students looking for a good scare. These are the kind of spooky stories I was raised with and, later, taught my K-3 students to read with (these range from grade level 2-4 or 5). Folklore parables with traditional motifs, solid storyline, scary, effects, and the jump-scare ending at just the right moment. I will be adding this to Favorite Scary Stories!

Best all around

These stories are well thought out and read very well. There's a hint of scare and a good dose of morality without the least bit of preachiness. These all seem like timeless stories that have been handed down for centuries.

Frightfully Fun Southern Storytelling

I chose this book Because I had enjoyed a couple of Ms. Reneaux's stories on The Moonlight Road webpage. I was not disappointed. These stories have the flavor of old southern storytelling, and are the sorts of fun, spooky tales for an entire family to enjoy on an October night around a bonfire. If you still have fond memories of Halloween nights and campfire tales, and if you love the unique traditions and folktales of Louisiana, you will certainly enjoy this audiobook.

Brilliant and Scary

The description says ages 8 to adult, but I'm glad I waited until my daughter was 11 before listening to these stories. Some are quite scary and leave lasting impressions. Wonderful stuff, though! She's a real treasure!

Wonderful for Halloween

I used J.J.Reneaux recordings telling "ghost" stories for many years around Halloween in my classroom. My students ( 2nd and 3rd graders ) always were completely engrossed in the story and their own writing became much livelier and more imaginative after listening to J.J.Reneaux. She truly was one of the all time great story tellers.
It's unfortunate that she wasn't the narrator for "Why Alligator Hates Dog". Whoever reads that tale ruins it with the bland, matter-of-fact delivery.

Some Authors Should Not Narrate Their Own Stories

The stories were not that great and the narrator was horrid. I went to college in Cajun Country and the accents were not that forced. While the author's name seems like a Cajun surname, the accent is off. I am happy that this was a free Audible book
