About this listen
The most fatal mistake? Trust. It's the foundation of any enduring relationship between friends, lovers, spouses, and families. But when trust is placed in those who are not what they seem, the results can be deadly. Ann Rule, who famously chronicled her own shocking experience of unknowingly befriending a sociopath in The Stranger Beside Me, offers a riveting, all-new collection from her true-crime files, with the lethally shattered bonds of trust at the core of each blood-soaked account. Whether driven to extreme violence by greed or jealousy, passion or rage, these calculating sociopaths targeted those closest to them - unwitting victims whose last disbelieving words could well have been "but I trusted you...."
Headlining this anthology is the case of middle-school counselor Chuck Leonard, found shot to death outside his Washington State home on an icy February morning. A complicated mix of family man and wild man, Chuck played hard and loved many...but who crossed the line by murdering him in cold blood? And why? The revelation is as stunning as the shattering crime itself, powerfully illuminating how those we think we know can ingeniously hide their destructive and homicidal designs. Along with other shattering cases, immaculately detailed and sharply analyzed by America's number-one true-crime writer, this 14th Crime Files volume is essential listening for getting inside the mind of the hidden killers among us.

Story
"A Rose for Her Grave" - the principal story of this collection - vividly recreates the cautionary tale of Randy Roth, a misogynistic sociopath from the Pacific Northwest whose rage was directed primarily at women and children. Addicted to his own greed, Roth exercised a powerful aura of control over his victims, using his ability to charm and boyish good looks to lower their defenses. By the time they saw the reality of the madness in his eyes, it was usually too late.

Story
David Brown was the consummate entrepreneur: a computer wizard and millionaire by age thirty-two. When his beautiful young wife was shot to death as she slept, Brown's fourteen-year-old daughter, Cinnamon, confessed to killing her stepmother. The California courts sentenced her harshly: twenty-four years to life. But in the wake of Cinnamon's murder conviction, thanks in part to two determined lawmen, the twisted private world of David Brown himself unfolded with astonishing clarity—revealing a trail of perverse love, twisted secrets, and evil mind games.

Story
One wintery night on tiny, quiet Whidbey Island off the coast of Washington, Russ Douglas spent Christmas with his estranged wife, Brenna. He left Brenna Douglas's home in Langley on the morning of December 26, 2003 to run some errands. He didn't return - dead of gunshot to the head. The suspects included an aging beauty queen, her guitar-teacher lover, and Russell's widow, Brenna. With her trademark aplomb, Ann Rule unravels the fascinating story of a murder, a small town, and a number of potential killers.

In this fascinating account, Ann Rule delivers a tour de force: a whirlwind of misguided love, denial, guilt, and passions out of control; a series of brilliantly manipulated crimes; the bizarre and horrifying tale of two families brought to ruin; and, at the center of it all, the heartless, supremely selfish sociopath whose evil hid behind soft words and gentle manners, but who destroyed—without mercy—those who loved her.

Story
Two men, each handsome and unusually adept at his chosen work, embodied an element of the great dynamic that characterized America’s rush toward the twentieth century. The architect was Daniel Hudson Burnham, the fair’s brilliant director of works and the builder of many of the country’s most important structures, including the Flatiron Building in New York and Union Station in Washington, D.C. The murderer was Henry H. Holmes, a young doctor who, in a malign parody of the White City, built his “World’s Fair Hotel” just west of the fairgrounds.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

A ship's pilot legendary for guiding mammoth freighters through the narrows of Puget Sound, Rolf Neslund was a proud Norwegian, a ladies' man, and a beloved resident of Washington State's idyllic Lopez Island. Virtually indestructible even into his golden years, he made electrifying headlines more than once: after a ship he was helming crashed into the soaring West Seattle Bridge, causing millions in damages; and following his inexplicable disappearance at age 80. Story
As an exotic dancer at The Great Alaskan Bush Company in Anchorage, Mechele Hughes Linehan knew how to captivate men. Three of them were convinced she was engaged to them. Then one spring morning in 1996, one man, Kent Leppink, was found in the snow, shot in the head....Days before his death, Kent had removed Mechele's name from his million-dollar life insurance policy. He wrote a letter to his family stating that, should he meet foul play, Mechele would likely be among those involved. But she wasn't charged with Kent's death. She married a doctor, moved to Olympia, Washington, and began a new life.

Story
It’s a chilling reality that homicide investigators know all too well: The last face most murder victims see is not that of a stranger, but of someone familiar. Whether only an acquaintance or a trusted intimate, such killers share a common trait that triggers the downward spiral toward death for someone close to them: They are masters at hiding who they really are. Their clever masks let them appear safe, kind, and truthful. They are anything but - and almost no one can detect the murderous impulses buried deep in their psyches.

This is a scary book, with some very violent incidents.
I always like Ann Rule. Feel bad Ann was scammed by her own sons for MORE of her money (she gave them 26k a WEEK!) when she was old and feeble.
This book summarizes the Cowden family murders and the extremely scary and weirdly sexual/incestuous (?) Little family. That the mother just buys whatever the son says is extremely unnerving. The dog in this one lives, but there's mention of other things that would be disturbing to animal lovers in this book.

more than just a little creepy.
the most memorable story in the book described the terrifying disappearance of an entire family while they were camping deep in the woods of Oregon and the horror that surely followed in the hands of their stalker. I listen to a lot of Ann Rule and true crime, yet somehow the description of this disturbing crime chilled me deeply and kept me up all night.

I love Ann Rule, but this just didn't do it for me
I'm relatively new to audio books, and while I've found most of the books I've listened to enjoyable, this one just didn't do it for me. I'm actually a very big Ann Rule fan and have read quite a few of her books. Something about the narration just made it feel like the book drug on and on and I found my mind wandering and was really unable to focus on the book.

True Crime cases by Ann Rule in her WA Satel
Ann Rule goes into graphic details in her Washington state true murders. The narrator makes easygoing listening to these horrific crimes. The last murders in the Oregon Forrest is especially cringing.

I loved the stories. but...
I loved the stories. but the narrator was choppy at parts, and you could tell it was edited. Ann rule has yet to let me down.

Oh no, Ann!
I’m a fan of Ann Rule’s work, and just finished Green River, Running Red, which was well researched. I then looked for my next true crime fix, and found this compilation of shorter true crime stories by Ann. There were a few negative reviews, but I went for it.
The lead story, But I Trusted You, read more like a soap opera. One where there’s a conniving female narcissist sifting through men, seeking to land the wealthiest one. This first story went about four hours, and I felt rather bored during most of it. The plot was rather thin and there wasn’t much to unravel. I think Ann is at her best writing about more complex criminal stories, such as with her work with serial killer Ted Bundy.
I will continue with the other short crime stories in this audiobook, hopefully they’ll be a bit more interesting. The narration was okay.

Disappointed
I’ve always enjoyed Ann Rule’s books, but this narrator put me to sleep. She was unable to hold my attention. I would even fall asleep when I replayed chapters. I finally gave up.
