About this listen

The Godfather meets Daniel Woodrell in this Southern debut, a multigenerational saga of crime, family, and vengeance.

Clayton Burroughs comes from a long line of outlaws. For generations the Burroughs clan has made their home on Bull Mountain in North Georgia, running shine, pot, and meth over six state lines, virtually untouched by the rule of law.

To distance himself from his family's criminal empire, Clayton takes the job of sheriff in a neighboring community to keep what peace he can. But when a federal agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms shows up at Clayton's office with a plan to shut down the mountain, his hidden agenda will pit brother against brother and test loyalties and could lead Clayton down a path to self-destruction.

Recommend

Good narration, excellent transition between a wide range of voices. The story is good but a tad bit predictable. Nice change from my norm.

Excellent Read!

This is one of the best books I have heard in a while. Just when you think the story has finished, it climaxes once again. The narration was superb. Lots of action, suspense, plot twists. Men will especially love this book. This one will definately go on my favorites list.

I love first novels because they tend to be very original. this book delivered on that front. the narrator was perfect.

Storytelling at its best

This is the kind of story that wins Oscars, Emmys and Tonys. At several points, I literally had to replay parts because I want to hear it again.

New and Exciting Author for Me!

Bull Mountain is the type of book I would have never picked on my own, but reading the reviews of Goodreads friends, I thought it sounded interesting and decided to give it a chance. I am so happy that I did because Brian Panowich’s debut novel is an exciting and engrossing find. This is the type of dark, gritty, and intriguing stories I live for.

Bull Mountain in Georgia has been owned for generations by the Burroughs family who, over time, have supported themselves first with moonshine, then marijuana, and now meth. Told in flashbacks of the last few generations, the current day brothers are as different as day and night. Hal lives on the mountain, runs the illegal business, and is as mean and evil as just about any character I have ever encountered. His estranged brother, Clayton, is the local sheriff and is a good man who bears the pain of his family’s many crimes. He tries so hard to be everything to everyone, including his wife, Kate, another exceptional character. I won’t go into much more except to say this story comes to an explosive conclusion that is gripping and painful. I was mesmerized.

I enjoyed listening to this on audiobook and loved the narration by Brian Troxell. He made these characters come alive. I have already purchased the next book in the series and will hopefully get to it soon to see what happens next. I wrestled with how to rate this book but finally decided on 4 ½ stars, rounded up to 5. I enjoyed it that much!

Bit confusing

It would hold my interest and then lose me. Not sure I liked it as honest as I can be.
