About this listen

Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras took 18 truly exceptional and long-lasting companies and studied each in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day - as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from the comparison companies and what were the common practices these enduringly great companies followed throughout their history?"

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the 21st century and beyond.

I think the point of the book is sometimes missed by many. It's a book about what core aspects are common for most great companies (from inception to great). Are some of these companies no longer visionary? Sure. But from the pitfalls that many of their comparison companies had. Most gave up on what made them visionary, some endured as well. It's about understanding what you stand for as a vision for yourself or your company.

Great foundational advice

Fantastic rock solid principles. Both practical and high-level advice for any business that will help them succeed. A couple of the concepts and chapters get a little wonky. And one of the two narrators can be a little over the top, but all in all this is one of the best business books out there, and I read a lot

One of the stronger business books out there

The title says it all here really.

I view this as a great analysis of the nature og great organizations.

The Authors also tilt toward the utility mindset, and are not afraid to look at alle sides of the topic they aim to clarify - What makes the difference between an organization or community that is built to last. Those with a correct definition of vision, a clear vision, a collective why/purpose, and B-hags as they call it in the book!

Pile that on top of my own findings which shines through the book, though it is not directly addressed - and you get the framework for a successful person/group/organization/community

I recommend this book.

Loved It. Great information that is still relevant. Has spurred interest in how these concepts apply to companies today. As well as similar research into similar minority companies started around the same time.

Interest spurred
