About this listen

Brown Enough, Christopher Rivas's first book, is a literary memoir about what it truly means to be Brown in America. Holding the weight of being a Latino man, Christopher wonders where he falls on the color line, widened through his experience as an ethnically ambiguous actor of color in Hollywood and the many dangers and pitfalls that come from owning one's Brownness. Told through the lens of his personal stories and in a unique and literal voice, Christopher examines the deep history of his Dominican and Colombian heritage.

Brown Enough is a breakthrough literary masterpiece that begs the question of what it means to be Brown in 21st century America, caught between cultures, and yet knowing that color lines are always starker than they appear.

Raw, unfiltered, and beautifully expressed

As a fellow brown millennial, I was surprised to open my eyes to so many new perspectives and truths found in Brown Enough. Rivas doesn’t just talk about what it’s like being brown in this country but the decades-long conversations that have been had with and without us, so many different stories of struggles and so much overlapping traumas and unspoken dialogues. However it’s still written/spoken with so much passion, humor, and relatable anecdotes that it flies by and leaves you feeling a bit hopeful and with A LOT to think about. Highly recommend

Powerful, real, vulnerable

Thank you for this book!! I'm half Mexican/Spanish and half Irish, pale, green eyes, and very ethnic hair. I've never fit into a group. This book spoke to my heart, brown voices matter! ❤️ Thank you Christopher Rivas!

A master class in writing and brown-ness

Christopher Rivas, an actor/writer I’ve admittedly never heard of, made me a lifelong fan with this book. I cannot give it enough praise. This is a story that so many people in this world can relate to. Written with love and an unapologetic desire to tell the truth, Christopher Rivas knocked it out of the park. This book deserves a lifetime of praise. Please read it.

Everything I needed

I have been having a lot of identity questions as I work to unpack all of the pressure of assimilation over the past 25 years. This book gave me an outlet and allowed me to really feel heard and seen, especially growing up in communities where I was the only one like me. This is a great book for someone who is on their own identity journey for their or for those who are curious about the weight on people shoulders every day and how to listen, really listen to others.

So Relatable

Thank you, Christopher Rivas, for sharing many stories that highlight the complexities of being brown, particularly in the U.S. As a half Mexican woman advocating nearly daily for equity in education, I was prompted to read your book when a white woman in a position of authority interrupted me mid-sentence to state, "people are annoyed when you say that [i was discussing my frustration with academic outcomes for our "black and brown" students]. She clarified that it was my use of the word "brown" that "people" find annoying. Whew. I appreciate the salve that your thinking and experiences provided to me and, I'm sure, many others.

Not for everyone

Not for everyone but it was for me. Refreshing and insightful to say the least. Love the concepts around the main topics. The search of always trying to be enough is so hard. We have everything inside of us to be amazing.
