About this listen

One of beloved author Debbie Macomber’s classic novels, this is a poignant story of moving on and trusting the power of love.

Carly Grieves is made of strong stuff. Tough and adventurous, she journeys to the wilds of Alaska looking for a new beginning. She finds more than she bargained for in Brand St. Clair, a rugged bush pilot who stirs something primal inside Carly that shocks her with its intensity. But he’s also a man with wounds, a widower stuck in the past. Carly desires him deeply, but she can’t compete with a dead woman for a place in his heart.

From the moment she sasses him, Brand knows there’s something special about Carly. She makes him want to love again, to reach for a new kind of happiness. As much pain as he has known, he’s ready to make his own fresh start with Carly. But first, the walls she’s built have to come down. Now Brand won’t give up until he convinces Carly that the biggest risk of her life is actually the safest move she could make: loving him.

Another great classic by MaComber

I really enjoy being able to listen to these books. I love Debbie MaComber’s writing. Her characters are lovable and very real. I did find myself wanting to shake the main character and tell her to wake up. But I could also relate to her on so many levels. I get how her past was affecting her future and her happiness. I thought the romance was very sweet. I would highly recommend this book to others. I liked the narrator as well. She did a good job at giving the characters a voice and bringing their story to life. I would. Listen to other books she reads.

Ehhhhh

I think this book definitely had potential but just fell short of meeting it. Switching between first and third person within a sentence drove me bonkers.

Have you ever hated the main character?

This is the first time I have hated the main character in a book. I almost quit listening at 30 minutes into it, but for some reason I kept giving it a try, and I hoped the girl would GROW UP and quit being so selfish. I found myself yelling back at the book when she would do something stupid, and is the guy stupid? Or desperate? I would have dropped her like a hot potato and moved on, and he had many chances. I really do NOT recommend this book for someone that is looking for a romantic love story, it will just irritate you. Also, what in the world era is this supposed to be set in? The early 90's? How they do things, like writing letters and calling "long distance" made me think so... but the verbage used made it feel a lot older than that. Half the time she sounded like she was a duchess talking and wouldn't stand for anything "used". I want a redo, can we get the same man in another book with a more deserving woman? I thought he was fantastic! Any woman would want such a caring man for herself!

UPDATE: I did find out the book was published in 1985, so the book reflects that. But I am still not happy about the two main women talking like they are in the English court!

Unrelatable

I tried throughout the whole book to relate to the main character and just couldn't. She was annoying and insanely self centered. It's not a book I would read again.

She got on my Nerves

By the time he stopped by the house with the carnations and she acted like she did I was yelling at him to leave. She was a special kind of crazy. I could not relate to her and I tried not to be too judgmental but she was self centered and even if you grew up poor or in foster care. a lot of people have you meet a person and feel them out and if you don't get the big flashing red lights you get to know them. This woman mad me smh. I can't keep going. She is borderline mean at times.

stupid

This book is just - stupid. The main character is annoying, can't get on with her life, has stupid qualms about everything & can't make up her mind. The boyfriend hangs around waiting for her to recognize she deserves real love. He is stupid for putting up with her
