About this listen
Dakota “Bones” Brooks is a determined, independent 12-year-old with a unique talent of free diving. While visiting his sick grandfather in the hospital, Papa Dave pulls Bones aside and slips him a secret treasure map containing cryptic directions to gold, hidden by American outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. His search takes place in the beautiful and challenging terrain of Southern Utah’s Castle Gate, Goblin Valley, Canyonlands National Park, and Lake Powell where his free diving skills are put to the test as they assist him in solving the mystery.
Bones and the Treasure Map is an adventure set in real places with real family relationships, a main character with a real “superpower”, and a little history about some real outlaws.

Exciting Treasure Hunt
Kevin Beck has written a delightful story about a 12-year-old boy, Dakota, faced with several life-threatening incidents and a powerful love of his grandfather. Visiting his grandfather in the hospital and realizing that his grandfather may never leave it, he sets out to earn enough money to pay for the medical care that is so desperately needed. First, he tries to improve his static apnea abilities and then participates in his first tournament with the ultimate goal to win the championship in the Bahamas and pay for the much-needed medical treatment.
It isn’t until his family goes on a vacation that Dakota, aka Bones, discovers that his static apnea abilities is instrumental in his and his grandfather’s survival. Stranded on an isolated beach deep in the “Hole in the Wall gang’s” territory does Bones make a startling discovery.
Kevin Beck has written an excellent coming of age and adventure story that anyone will enjoy. The dialog and interaction between Bones, his family and his friends were well done and moved the story along appropriately. His screaming at one of his dozen (it was more like 4 or 5) sisters was not only realistic but was done so well that I could visualize the fighting perfectly.
Beck took his time developing each character through several instances that displayed who and how they were going to be in this book. The portrayal of each character was immaculate and accurate. Bones and The Treasure Map is a story that takes history, sleuthing and real-life instances to build a solid plot with some mouth gaping twists.
Zane VanWicklyn performed Bones and the Treasure Map masterfully. He is very adept at voices and putting the perfect amount of tonal inflection on the words to move the story along. Not only did he bring each character to life, but he made the story even more realistic.
This is a book that comes highly recommended; I hope to hear more written by Kevin Beck and hear more performances by Zane VanWicklyn.
