Be careful where you eat

I took a chance on a genre that I don’t usually read and thought to try this book. Even though I don’t think I am this books target audience, I was able to follow along.

A diner is the location where everything takes place. It’s where people stop in for a vegan meal and drinks. It has a quirky and interesting regular, newcomers and an owner who is tired of the regulars bs. Just about everyone that walked in had something to hide or something they need to pay a penance for. They’ve either done something sinister or illegal or they’re about to.

The author takes you on a wordy ride through their conversations, thoughts and actions which leads to life or death situations. I will not be stopping in a vegan diner slash bar ever!

I have to say that the dialogue between the two black men was off to me because I’m black, we don’t use the word thug as a slang/descriptor for ourselves, they used mfer too much like Samuel Jackson in pulp fiction, and the vernacular felt dated like I was waiting to hear “ya dig” - oh wait I did.

Now the narrator killed it! She was the reason I stuck it out with this book. The way that she easily transitioned from a male to a female voice, the voice inflection, the tone, the gruff, the sound effects - she was spectacular and carried this book for me.

I’m glad I ventured out of my comfort zone and I wish the author success with his target audience. I hope he takes note of what I said regarding his black characters.
