I have listened to several maritime adventure books, including a few related to the late 1800s and early 1900s. So I had perhaps some advantage when it came to this book, which uses a lot of nearly forgotten sea-faring terminology from that era. But some people may find this terminology difficult. Even the terminology used on land in this book is sprinkled with strange terms that are now rarely encountered (dropsy for edema, for instance).

Still, I actually really enjoyed this book, and the antiquated language may have made it more interesting for me. It's a very sweet story. The narration is very soft and gentle too, reminding me at times of the voice of Fred Rogers (a.k.a. Mr Rogers). The music and occasional sound effects also added to my enjoyment. I thought it was a nice touch in a book that has obvious cinematic appeal (it has been made into several movies).

Because the book is so gentle, I figure that it was written for young people --perhaps teens. But this may not be true. It may be more a reflection of the author's sensibilities and perhaps also the literary sensibilities of the time. I thought a few things in the story seemed very unlikely and hard to swallow. In particular, the description of the hurricane did not quite ring true. The storm causes a lot of destruction, but miraculously, no injuries. And we are told next-to-nothing about what the characters do during the hours-long storm and how they managed to survive it unscathed.

Enjoyable, but terminology is difficult at times

it is just the best of the best, has a happy ending and is heart wrenching, love the nature and child like behaviors.

I like the music added to the background of the story. It adds a nice element to the book. Overall, a classic story with a good narrator. I thought parts of it were slow - that is the only negative.

The music added is nice.

I loved the description of the island that was a very immersive. I would not say this was a “romance.” I suppose the author did his best for a man born in the 1800’s but could not for his life, write from the perspective of a woman.(let’s just say were many
anatomical inaccuracies)

Lovely just lovely

I really enjoyed listening to this one. Lovely descriptions and I really enjoyed the soundtrack with it.

A pleasure to listen to...

Excellent story and great narration, however, just like the movie, at the end one is left wondering what happens after they are rescued.

Enjoyed the audiobook as much as the movie.

A great book that I found to be developmental and maturative for a young man coming of age such as myself. I found such great relation with the protagonist and I further highly recommend this book.

A fantastic story
