Publisher's summary
Jessica doesn't know how long it's been, only that it seems like forever since she's allowed her feelings to show. Ever since they attacked her city. Monsters which appear human but are void of any expression, and seem bent on destroying all signs of sentiment in others. Their lethal blades shred anyone who shows even the slightest emotion. After her only remaining friend is killed, Jessica flees the city hoping to find a place where emotions aren't fatal. A place to grieve those she lost and live out her meager existence. When she discovers the world of the emotionless creatures isn't what she believes, the love it leads her to may also be the path to her own death.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Story
In the not-too-distant future, a 21-member crew launches from Earth. Their mission: to establish a temporary colony on Mars. Little do they know that colony will become permanent–and the last stand of the human race. Because, without warning, every single person left on Earth simply...vanishes. Now, a thousand years later, the resources needed to sustain life are running out, and the very existence of the Mars colony is threatened. Humankind has only one option–to return to its home planet.

Unique Plot & Sweet Love
This unexpected find on audible escape is a great Young Adult Post-Apocalyptic Romance. At first glance one could mistake it for a horror story, but it quickly morphs into something different. The characters are authentic [down to teenage angst as it is within the young adult genre] and the world building is unique. The narration is great too.

What a strange but good story
This was a different kind of story. The concept of trying to have a relationship with a monster that could kill you is scary. I enjoyed the story & characters. Well written and the narrator did a great job.

Dystopian Teen Romance
Sometimes there is no controlling your heart. But what if that control is the only thing keeping you alive?
Aliens invade earth and kill almost all of the humans. The aliens look like us, but they don't act like us. The few humans that are left have learned that showing emotion will get you instantaneously killed. How will a teenage girl stay alive while she deals with coming of age, new feelings, and falling in love?
This is an endearing story of young love. Jessica is a strong female character stumbling her way into the first real love of her life - an alien! She makes mistakes, tries to repair them, and then makes bigger mistakes. Will she ever figure this out?
I enjoyed listening to Jessica reminisce about her little brother and watching her unlikely romance develop. The story was interesting, and kept my attention. I finished it in less than 24 hours :) I would definitely read more books by this author.
I didn't notice the narrator at all. I only heard the story. To me, that is a sign of a great narrator. There were no production or narration mistakes in the book. It was easy to distinguish one character from the other when they spoke.

Interesting idea
Aliens have invaded Earth, aliens who attack and kill anything that shows emotion. This is a very interesting idea because most humans show emotion all the time, this is reflected in the face that most humans have been killed in the first 9 months.
Jessica is just trying to survive, but that's far from easy. She shows her youth by making some bad decisions but overall she's doing a pretty good job. I was enjoying the story until Jessica met Blade an Alien who's trying to overcome his nature and not react to emotion. After that it became a stereotypical boy and girl wanting to be together despite the odds story.
I was expecting a dystopian survivalist story, but it turned into a tortured love romance story, which was a bit disappointing.
That said, it's well written and the characters are well crafted, the story moves at a good pace and the narration is top notch so there's lots of positives.
Speaking of the narrations, the character voices were excellent and the tone of the narration was a great match for the moods of the book.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

Bleak Devotion
Bleak Devotion by Gemma Drazin first attracted my attention due to the narrator, Stacey Glemboski. Stacey is outstanding in my opinion. She adds the right emotions to the situations and brings the characters to life, hence the 5 star performance rating. The story is more futuristic than I typically am drawn to, so I'd rate it 3.5 stars and round up to 4 stars. I had requested this requested this review audiobook and have voluntarily written this review. There were many elements of the book that I did enjoy.
