solid story

the series is good. I like the characters, for the most part, and the universe is well developed and fun. the story itself is also one I quite enjoy.

some critiques for the MC in this particular book: why did he suddenly get stupid? it felt like he made a lot of amateur mistakes that don't make sense for his character. ESPECIALLY at the end, where he stalled and postured rather than ending things quickly in a very obvious and easy to do way. Suddenly, his flare for the dramatic ramped up to 11, and he opened his mouth instead of doing his job and ending things. Given the ending, I feel like it might've been a forceful way to set the groundwork for the setting and conflict in the next book, but it comes off as forced and sloppy because it makes the MC look a bit incompetent. There may have been a few instances of stupid mistakes previously, but there were far too many in this particular installment, and really stood out as a result.

That said, I will still continue the series.

Lastly, a note of caution. If you're the type to get offended by politics, you might have to skip or ignore some parts. the political scenes were seemingly written by someone who watches too much fox news or other American right-wing propaganda networks and doesn't do anything in terms of actual fact checking or research, but it's all just shallow nonsense. It’s a fantasy book, so it could also be satire expressing how those things are fantasy. I'm not positive since I don't care enough to find out. I'm not the type to be offended easily, and the rest of the story is enjoyable enough to ignore those parts with a bit of eye-rolling.
